I just turned 18 and I'm an illegal immigrant in the u.s. should i sign up with selective services?
Answer:
Wow...good on you!
I would FIRST try to become legal...THEN worry about registering...
Thanks for trying to be PART of our country! Hope all goes well!
Welcome to the USA
yes u have to do it , it is not an option but something u have to do . everyone does it , u don't need to worry about it and yes it could affect u not doing it ( u could lose the opportunity to become legal in the future or u could be fined as much as 250 000 dollars if u remember correctly ) . so u better do it and avoid a problem in the future . to get a registration card u need to go and ask for it in your nearest post office , they sure will know . u will also need to let them know every time u move into another place so they may have your information updated . good luck and don't forget to do it .
by the way the Selective Service is not equal to joining the army or anything like that but it means than if the USA was shorth of soldiers and needed more u could be eligible as anyone else to be drafted . it is important to mention than drafting is highly unpopular and very uncommon . i would like to mention too that u should not listen women about this since most don't even know what the Selsective Service is about as u can see in the answer of the first answerer . good luck again u have nothing to be worried about unless u do not do it and tell all who are 18 to 25 to do it too if they receive that letter .
note : the Selective Service is not part of immigration but it may affect your status in the future , the card which they send u says that very clearly . so u have not need to go see a lawyer , it would be a waste of time . they do have a website but it does not allows anyone with out SS to registrate that way so yuour only option is the post office .
You have been here since you were a baby, I doubt that they would deport you for wanting to join our armed forces. If you are being honest about this and do get into trouble, I would call the ACLU or a rep of the Catholic Church who deals sympathetically with illegal immigrants. Also the local press, preferably a liberal paper.
go back to mexico
I am trying my best not to yell but WHO CARES. You are here ILLEGALLY. If you want to join your family as a legal go back to the old country , go to the US embassy , Fill out the paperwork & come back the legal way. Then go & register at the post office. Good luck. Just do the right thing.
Well, since there is not a draft at this time, signing up just means that they have your name and address. I don't know a lot about it --did not know that non-citizens were required to sign up for selective service. Are you sure about that?
In any case, the part about "could negatively affect your chances of getting citizenship" I think that is just scare tactics.
You might want to talk to a lawyer who knows immigration law. They can tell you what you are required to do and what you are not.
Yeah the crazy laws in the US. Here is the thing, if you are able to get citizenship or residency without doing it. Certain kinds of aid and assistance you will not be able to get especially when it comes to education. You can always have your mother file for you and then sign up for selective services.
You see immigration will not be able to do anything to you as long as you have some status pending and they give you a response. It usually takes about 3 months before they give a reply for any petition you file and in that way it would seem like you were doing the 'legal' thing.
But I recommend going on the immigration website and checking the info on that site, it is a lot of leg work but it can save you $1,000 of dollars if you decide to get a lawyer because the law changes so much half the time they don't know what is going on and neither do the people at immigration.
