How would U.S. citizens react to an effort by Mexico to anex the southwest?
Answer:
Over my dead body! No other way. .
I live in Arizona and we are ready for that if its attempted.
I think the other illegals would not help the Mexicans. Its not in their best interest. I would hope this is never tried but if it is... it will fail ,at least in my state.
The land was taken as the spoils of war after the USA beat Mexico in a war. Then paid money for.We also paid for the Gadsden Purchase that now comprises my state and others. It is the United States of America and so it shall be always.By the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, signed February 2, 1848, at the close of the Mexican War, the Republic of Mexico was compelled to abandon its claim to Texas and to cede to the United States the territory now comprising most of New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah and Nevada. The territory ceded to the United States by Mexico constituted about 200,000 square miles or two-fifths of all her territory.
In return for this barren territory, the United States gave $15,000,000 and assumed responsibility for paying $3,000,000 in claims of American citizens against the Mexican Government. The territory desired by Gadsden and his group was then a sort of no man's land, experiencing frequent Indian raids. The United States wanted to make certain "boundary adjustments"; Mexico needed money and wanted a settlement of her Indian claims against the United States; and Gadsden and his friends wanted a route for their railroad. In 1852 Gadsden agreed to pay Santa Anna $10,000,000 for a strip of territory south of the Gila River and lying in what is now southwestern New Mexico and southern Arizona.
We also bought Louisiana from the French and I don't hear them crying about .
Did you know that the US were acutally the ones who took the Southwest from Mexico. The Mexican territory stretched much farther north. So if Mexico did that, they would only be taking back the land that was originally their's (after taking it from the natives, as the British did in America).
That is a very odd question. First of all, they'd have to declare war on the U.S. to attempt to annex foreign territory. Mexico has a rather weak military and is politically inept, and moreover, they are considered one of our allies. I sincerely doubt they would ever try something that.
However, if you are talking about Mexican immigrants, legal/illegal/just Mexico lovers, breaking off from the U.S. to rejoin Mexico just because of a large population, that is still pretty crazy.
I do think that leaders in the Latino community need to stress that this is America, and immigrants need to respect that. Mexicans aren't the Borg, they will not assimilate us. But they are very ethnocentric...An American culture of all races/religions/prior nationalities needs to be emphasized to every person who lives, or plans to live within the confines of our borders.
cLook up Cowbird.
its a bird who plants it eggs in another birds nest, lets that bird feed raise educate them. There free to have many more offspring, just like illegals. they can run wild in our country with little if any responsibility, whine endlessly for scraps of handouts from the civilized native people.
This is the way their doing it now, thats why you hear them shrill about taking away the freebies.
i bet if the mexicans want it, they can try and come get it. i bet in the end we might end up with another state.
Suicide if you are Mexican.
No other country would get involved.
I'm sure all the other immigrants would be against it too.
You forgot to include other Hispanics in the list.
I would love to see them try it would be awesome. All our troops would come home from Iraq and this bullshit would actually come to an end, and so would they!
