Why do most Americans consider people from Spain Hispanics, don't they realize they're European?

Besides everyone knows that the Spaniards are like our lazy cousins who chose to stay home instead of looting the New World. I am personally offended that anyone would refer to them as Hispanics. They are lazy bums.

Hispanic means "spanish speaking." they're not being refered to as latinos.
Well, I'm from USA and I don't consider them the same. They are all Latinos. But that's the only way I think you can generalize their race.
i agree -- the spainards don't want anything to do with the spanish speakers on our side of the earth.
keep in mind, most americans haven't traveled outside their county, state, much less country. and if they do they put on their white tennis shoes and blue jeans and traipse all over europe trying to find a restaurant that serves hamburgers.

Hispano term was used politically by Nixon and due to this there is a lot of confusion. Spanish speaking people of America (from Mexico to Chile) call themselves latin-americans (term used by french in 19 century) instead hispano-americanos (term used by spaniards).
The true hispanos are spaniards, because they live in Hispania (old roman province)
Hispanic means Spanish-speaking so Spaniards ARE hispanic. I never met a Spaniard who was adverse to being called hispanic.
