Emigrating to India?
I am moving to India in about 6 years, My husband is from Mumbai and I am an american-born west indian guyanese. We will be visiting there this year and I will get a PIO card.
A few questions: how hard is it to get a PIO (person on indian origin) card, how long is it valid
Also what do you have to do to get Indian Citizenship and how long is the process
Thanks in advance
Answer:
I am not sure about the requirements of India. But my husband is Pakistani and I do know that I was (and still am) eligible to apply for NIC card as well as citizenship if I had the interest.
My best advice to you is to visit the Indian Embassy online to check the requirements. If it's anything like PK, the process should be an easy one and will probably only require your basic personal information, passport number, documentary evidence of relationship, and/or birth certificate. But I would check to be sure as well as to know how long the PIO takes to process and fees. I have no idea how long it will be valid but I am guessing indefinitely or perhaps as long as a standard passport is valid?
If you are wishing to get citizenship on the grounds that you intend to live there permanently, then it will obviously be necessary. But do keep in mind that once you obtain citizenship (dual) then the US has requirements about how long you may live there without it affecting your ability to be a US citizen. In fact you might even lose your US citizenship altogether. So I would think about this beforehand and also contact the US embassy about it prior to making any decisions. Best of luck to you.
you seem to have masochistic tendencies
During your birth, your father should have been an Indian citizen.
