What do Americans think of Oprah setting up a school in Africa for kids who appreciate?

As for me, I believe it is her perfect right to set up a school wherever she chooses. As to finding kids in the USA who would appreciate it, probably she would find some, but it would be less easy to find all highly qualified students, in the same area, who would want her school. Her roots were in Africa, why should she not want to benefit students from that country? I say let the critics do the same wherever they choose, and maybe some disgusting schools could be obliterated.

In the grand scheme of things- this one seems like a decent thing to do.
In the jewish teachings, there are seven levels of charitable giving. Knowing who you're giving to, and that they know you -is the lowest level. I'm not sure where creating a media frenzy around giving falls, but I guess that's still category 1. Nevertheless- Even the lowest level of giving is still a good thing.

my kids appreciate knowledge too. they appreciate it even more than those Africans because they had to cross the border illegally and risk their lives to get a good education.

I think that any random act of kindness in this world is great. There is so much hate and violence. By the way, she gives MILLIONS away to USA causes also, and I am not talking about her yearly "give-away" show.
Oprah has a lot of money and she spends it to help people. She can choose any part of the world to help and she has.
To the person who said she just does it for the publicity, does he/she think Bill Gates is the same? Personally, Oprah got her money from reinventing herself and has nothing to prove. Bill Gates got his money from having a monopolistic stranglehold on operating systems and software and buying out or shutting out competition just like Rockefeller and Standard Oil. I think he is OBLIGATED to help others like Carnegie, et al.
I think it is a wonderful gesture and I support it 100%! Oprah has no ulterior motive except to continue in the tradition of her family heritage. She stands othe shoulders of her family before her and the dream lives on through her giving nature.
Africa is a wonderful place to build her dream school. The children are appreciative and ask for nothing in return. I want those girls to be empowered and believe that they can make a difference in the lives of their people. We have doctors, lawyers, law enforcement and cpa's, etc. Why can't they? I admire the relationship between she and Nelson Mandela and hope it prospers for many years to come. God bless Mother Africa!
I think she could have helped them people in the Gulf Coast that were hit by the hurricane, before she went to Africa. Why not help people here first. I think she did it for ratings if nothing else. If she didn't want to help the gulf coast then she could have started a school in the same area where her grandmother or who ever that was did. I really don't have much respect for her now. It's like going to some foreign country to adopt a kid, why not do it here we sure have enough. Even help the Native Americans haven't they been taken to the cleaners enough?????

Everytime I see the advertisement for the upcoming show, I get goosebumps. How absolutely incredible for children who have lost so many to AIDS and war, who have all but lost hope to be given such a gift.
It seems to me to be one of those "teach them how to fish" deals and an incredible example of how one person CAN change the world.
I think all the publicity around it is GREAT! If it helps her personally, God bless her but in a larger sense, it can encourage others to do what they can to reach out and help someone.
I think its wonderful she is making a difference to her so called heritage,but if she wasnt raised in America she wouldnt be able to do what shes doing.I think its a nice tax right off.
No matter what her reasons are (publicity, her roots, etc), I think it's still great that she is doing something positive with all the money she has. Now we only need to get her to help out more with the kids in AMERICA!
I think that she has the right to do anything she wants with her money.I would have liked for her to have perhaps helped black American children first.There are many children right here in this nation that could use a new school and all the books etc.But I am glad she is doing something for children somewhere in the world.

It is Oprah's money she can do what ever she wants with it. She came from nothing and was sucessful. People act like they have the right to tell her to do with her money. Let me ask these people one thing....Did you donate to any organizations to help others such as United Way?

It appears many people question Oprah's motive for doing what she does. Regardless of what people may say to the contrary, at least she is doing something rather than sitting around criticizing other peoples efforts while doing NOTHING constructive themselves. It her money - she has a right (in America) to do with it whatever she wants as long as it is not illegal, immoral, or unethical.
it's her money that she earned, and it's not our business what she does with it. personally, i think she had a good point...when she went to inner city schools in the US and asked them what they needed, they said crap like, "ipods" and "nikes." american kids don't seem to have the desire to learn. i wouldn't waste my money on them either. they have a sense of entitlement that's pretty sick to think about. i am seriously worried about some of americas youth.
