What is the process of acquiring citizenship for my Mexican fiance if I am American?

We are marrying in July of 2007. He is currently legally employed in the US. If he has a history of work/student visas how long can gaining citizenship really take? Any tips for a timely success?

Answer:
First off, what you are filing for is not citizenship, but legal permanent residence (a green card). The process is detailed on the USCIS website. You file form I-130 (visa) and form I-864 (affidavit of support). He files form I-485 (adjustment of status). If he is legally in the US and eligible to file for adjustment of status along with your petition, then you can expect a processing time of 8 months or so. During that time period, he'll have to go in for fingerprinting (FBI criminal history). Assuming he has no arrests, his immigration history is in order, and you can show you have a real marriage, he will receive a conditional green card good for two years. At the end of that time, you will both have to go back to USCIS to apply for a permanent green card. Once he has had his green card for three years, he can file for citizenship as the spouse of a US citizen [five years for other applicants]. His past immigration history has to be spelled out and documented in the applications, but shouldn't have a big effect on how long it takes to process the paperwork. The key thing, especially for a new marriage, is to provide documents showing the marriage is real and not solely for purposes of acquiring a green card. Include photos (dating, wedding) and any joint documents (bills, bank accounts, insurance) along with your marriage license in the application. Between the time of filing and the time of your interview, start integrating your financial lives. Put him on your insurance, for example (or vice versa). Then take all the additional documents to the interview.
Every case is different and the lengths of time to process are different. I would suggest contacting a good immigration attorney. That will be your best bet of getting answered correctly.
After you are married you will file the "adjustment packet" this includes: the I-130 relative petition, I-765 work permit, I485 adjustment of status. He should be approved with-in 6 months from filing.
