Immagration question (non political)?

My boyfriend is from the Bahamas. He was here on an F1 Student Visa but he graduated and the visa expired which they told him was fine since he was waiting on a work permit as long as he stayed in the country until he got a job.

Are there any exceptions to the part where they say you cannot leave the country until you have your papers and a Job. He is still waiting on his papers and his sister passed away this morning.

Is there exception for that type of thing so that he can go home for the funeral?

Answer:
No. there are honestly NO EXCEPTIONS.
If he leaves the chances of getting back in without the proper documents are scarce.
