American Citizen Marrying an Indian and Living in india.?
Answer:
For quickest travel, you may want to get a tourist visa. As spouse of an Indian citizen, you are eligible to become an Overseas Citizen of India. Costs around $ 300 and takes about 4 months. With it, you are just like any Indian citizen, except you will not have voting rights. For info, check out any Indian consulate web site.
When you marry over there, I believe the right thing to do is to go on a tourist visa. After the marriage, go to the embassy in Chennai, the Bitish Embassy covers USA also. Inform them of your marriage and then let the Indian Embassy know too.
You should then apply for citizenship of that country, this will take time but you may be given an extended visa while this is sorted out. think you can have dual nationality passport too, this again can be sorted out in Chennai at the Embassy and you may also have to go to Hyderabad for a seperate interview and to finally collect your new passport. I am doing a wedding out there myself this month, I am from England. Please do check at the Embassy after the wedding and theywill advise you on everything. Congratulations and good luck
I will obviously tell that u are not doing any mistake!
You must check every thing first. This will help you make informed decisions, and you will avoid surprises. Must not leave any thing to chance show my answer to your lawyer and USA passport office.
Take an advice from a good lawyer in USA+USA embassy. Keep every thing in writing like written opinion of lawyer, written instruction .......do not throw away or loose it.
Do not give up your USA citizenship under any condition. Talk to some one in USA embassy in India, or state department here in USA.
Passport office in USA may be able to direct you. You will need USA passport, to get Indian visa.
Visa will be given by India or Indian embassy in USA. Try and get long term Multiple entry VISA from Indian embassy, so if you need to travel out of India for fun or other reasons you can do so on the spot, come to USA without any problem and go back at will.
I do not know if India issues indefinite VISA to the spouse of an Indian.
If you are not going to work in India then it should not be a problem, but law are subject to change from time to time. So get good advice up front.
I believe USA issues 10 year Passport, my last one was 10 year Passport.
Moving to India from US is a very bold decision. Good luck.
