What does a US Citizen need in order to obtain valid working papers in France?

I am an American in France and am up for a job interview with a French company that does not seem to know how to hire a US citizen. They have asked me to look into it. From what I can glean from the US Embassy site, the employer needs to submit a form to the Ministry of Labour--how onerous is it, and how long does it take? How annoying/expensive would it be for the employer?
Secondary question: What procedures apply for me to do freelance work for this same company? Is it the same mess as with full-time employment?
Thank you.

Answer:
