How come illegal aliens get a free college education while the rest of us have to pay for one ?
Poudre High School counselor Isabel Thacker found a way around that, and this fall will be the second year that some of the high school’s undocumented students will participate in a program that allows them to attend college at the University of New Mexico - many without paying for tuition and books.
“A bill passed in New Mexico in 2005 prohibited the state from denying education benefits based in immigration status,” said Terry Babbitt, director of admissions for the University of New Mexico. “We have to offer state financial aid to any student, regardless of their immigration status,” he said. New Mexico’s state financial aid, however, is intended for residents. Despite the apparent obstacle, a loophole in UNM’s residency requirements was discovered that allows the undocumented students from Fort Collins, CO to receive in-state tuition in New Mexico as well as an institutional scholarship that covers completely the cost of their tuition.

Got to love it. It is now cheaper to go to college in New Mexico if you are an illegal immigrant than if you are an American student paying in-state or out of state tuition - that's just wrong.

So, Colorado kids, or kids from anywhere, just have to claim to be illegal aliens to get reduced tuition in New Mexico. Every out-of-state student should claim to be illegal. There is no way they can check up on it, and if they did, so what? Residency and citizenship laws mean nothing, and I would enjoy seeing them reject some Utah or Arizona kid because he or she is an American citizen. What good reading that would make. High school counselors all over the country should be rounding up kids and getting them that instate status and financial help. Having trouble affording college? Come to New Mexico. They don’t call it the Land of Enchantment for nothing.

I don't take a hardline stance on Mexican immigration, but immigration status should be factor in receiving a higher education.
I know it sucks doesn't it. Here in Oklahoma they want to pass a bill the illegals only have to pay in state tuition. Can anyone be more out of state than an illegal? So if an American from Kansas wanted to go to OU, and who wouldn't, they would have to pay more than an illegal Alien. It makes absolutely no sense to me. But what do I know I'm just a lowly citizen of the United States.

You're understanding isn't quite right. The aliens are required to be treated as in-state residences and their college tuition is based upon in-state students. So the state has to subsidize their education, but it isn't free.
Still, an illegal alien can attend college in the USA for a lower cost than out-of-state US citizens.

Probably because they do not have the economical life we have here in the US. People in Mexico are poor and live life one day at a time not knowing if there going to eat are not. A lot of Families send there children at the age of 5 to the streets to sell gum, wash windshields and do other things to bring money to thee house. They only way to get a better life is to go to the US illegally and so that's why the government is helping them with their education and welfare.
you make it seem like there isnt any scholarships or grants for others.the lottery pays for more college tuition than tax dollars...here in Florida if you graduate over a 3.0 and you get over a certain SAT score the foundation sponsored by the lottery pays for 75% of your tuition and books...if you volunteer over 100 hours you get a full ride

I agree it is wrong to fund the education of those who broke our laws. Keep a eye on the Dream Act in congress. This will allow illegals not only to receive financial aid, but will let them become citizens at a later date. With financial aid the money goes to those with limited income, and the money is very small, so when illegals apply with little or no reportable income they will dry up the limited funds. This is just another case of , act as is, if you treat illegals as if they are legal, this blurs the line between illegal and legal and as time goes on this makes them llegal
Yes, it's true. Not only do they get in-state tuition rates, they also get extra tutoring and scholarship programs which I do not qualify for because I am American (even though I come from a very poor family and I would have benefited from the scholarships). I went to a state university in southern Cali and as long as you are in the "underrepresented minority group" you qualify for all these special programs regardless of legal status. "Underrepresented minorities" include all ethnicities except white and Asian (Asians and whites made up 70% of the student body). So my school really emphasized how important the color of your skin is before one's legal status in the U.S. It is REALLY WRONG. Americans come first.

All I have to say , Is that I support this kind of legislation, there is nothing wrong with wanting to get an education.
If one of the many used excuses anti-imigrants use is that undocumented immigrants are uneducated , thus "low-lifes" .Then getting an education is the best thing they can do.
Besides they still have to pay , because they do not qualify federal aid, only state aid and they have to pay certain fees too.
If you are an American citizen you have acess to all kinds of financial aid and scholarships.
SO NO I do not believe is cheaper for an undocumented illegal to go to school.
