I have a J1 visa but want to act in my free time,?

if I do this in a professional capacity am I violating the terms of my visa. That is to say I get paid to act. If that is the case does anyone have any solutions on what I could do to act say as an extra, in commercials etc to improve my acting resume-without violating my visa terms.

Answer:
You can take a paid acting job on a J1 visa. You can take any type of employment you choose to take. A J1 visa is based on "cultural exchange" so you're not limited as to employment. With a J1 visa, you don't have permision to remain long term in the United States. US Immigration's main concern is that you don't outstay your welcome -they're not going to monitor your employment
Get paid in cash and it never gets reported as income and voila you dont pay any taxes and you dont get reported for violation of your visa terms either.

Your welcome.
I have no idea.

What about participating in community theatre? You wouldn't get paid, but it can bulk up your resume.
