How do sanctuary cites work ?

I wanted to know if illegal aliens with extensive arrest histories, are the police barred by ''sanctuary'' policy's to find out if a person from another country has a past criminal history ? Are the police officers barred from contacting the INS when they arrested an illegal alien ?

Answer:
Basicly they are not allowed to ask any questions as to whether they are legally here or not. Even if they know they are, that part is "left out" and they are processed just as if they were a citizen. I don't think there's any check on their criminal history in another country or any other criminal history under another name in this country. I am curious to see what they'll do in one case here. The guy was a known illegal. He murdered his wife or girlfriend and they assumed "fled to Mexico". Recently he was found in California and is to be sent back here for his crimes. I wonder if he will serve time and be deported or serve time and set loose again. It's supposidly not his first brush with the law.
Each one is different. In Los Angeles, they can check immigration status if you are arrested for a crime of a certain level, I want to say felony, but I think there are 'classes' of misdemeanors you can be checked for as well. Otherwise they simply do not ask or take action. You can put "Special Order 40" in your browser and get a better description. Houston has one too, each is a little different.

Lov3dbb - Maywood is special. There is an ordinance there prohibiting the police from stopping people for traffic violations, because too many illegall immigrants were being asked for their licenses, as I understand it. From a news report last year, there are many more people illegally living there than legally living there.
Below are some sites I found on a sanctuary city called Maywood here in Southern Calif. It does not completely answer your question but it will give you a little insight to what it is all about.

These are cities that are violating fedaral law & making thier cities places where crime is rampant and the rights of their citizens are ignored.
