I also found out the hard way that once a non-American leaves the US, even if they are still married to an American citizen, it can be extremely difficult to get the back into the US legally, particulary with the right to work. We are looking at a minimum of 3-4 year wait right now to get my wife over here, and it could be as long as decades. I believe if your divorced was due to abuse you could have stayed in the US. You need a travel permit and green card to enter the US, a work permit is not enough.
