Have you tried applying for it? They don't just hand you residency as a matter of course - you have to fill in the appropriate forms.
As soon as you cant prove that you were legaly staying and working since 2001 you cant do that, if you do it and they find out you were staying for 3 years illegaly they will deport you, so wait for another two years and then go ahread.
If you go down to Dover there is an office in the port . You go and ask for a ticket to France . When you get to France you will find it wont be a problem, Hope it all works out .
