Should all immigrants learn how to speak Englinsh? SHould the government make it mandatory or a must?

Answer:
Of course they should. How can you expect to function properly if you don't speak the language? We cannot be expected to print everything in every language there is.
And glitterback, we shouldn't be forced to learn Spanish in America, it is not our language. Our language, in our land, is English. Why should illegals try to force us to speak Spanish? It would be nice if they could apply for all the benefits we hand out in our language. We live here. LEGALLY. Now, you might be proud to be illegal, but you must admit, speaking the language of the country you live in is a necessity.
My father came here from another country, learned English and became a citizen. Anyone from his country that he found not learning English sure heard it from him. They were in America, they needed to learn the language. And they did. They went on, most of them, to own their own businesses here. They might not have come with fancy degrees, but they sure made a positive impact once they got here. Many employed natural citizens of this country. And while they had a love for "the old country", they had adopted America as home, and were proud to be citizens.
When you are here only to send money back to your own country, then I guess it doesn't matter.
Oh, one more question glitter, there are immigrants here from other countries. Why do you assume we should not learn to speak Vietnamese here as well as English? Or are you admitting that 99.9% of the illegals here are Mexican?
You know, most Mexicans are upset we are not assuming they are from other South American countries and countries from overseas as well. If you are so proud, then go back and make that gutter you love so much a better place to live in, then we have no problem with you needing any language except Spanish, and we shall keep English as our language.
I think it is already
Absolutely, they should if they want to become a citizen of the US. I don't know about you but I'm tired of having to push the one button on the phone to hear the menu in English.
it is if you come here legally... but how do you tell someone you don't really "know" is here to learn english hence the term illegal... it's like telling a serial killer to stop killing...

kevin below--the constitution says a right to freedom of speech... which is a group of words grouped together to make a statement, question etc... it does not mean it guarentees a right to speak whatever language you want... nor does it deny it... so therefore it is not against the constitution

to glitter- nor do you cater to us by learning english or posting anything in mexico in english... nor do you require most job interviewers to be bilingual now.
The government should not make it mandatory, that would be beyond it's power under the constitution..but yes..the language of our land is English, so they should speak it. They can speak whatever other language they want with their friends and family and in private, but in the public forum they should speak English.

Eclipse above me - Exactly, I'm not talking about the freedom of speech. Any power not explicitly given to the federal government by the constitution is inherently held by the states. So the States can pass a law stating that the official language is English, but that is beyond the power of the federal government to do.
it is already expected. i won't be held liable for the cost though. most people in the world learn a language before presenting themselves on the shores of a foreign land...thus showing the interest in assimilating and not showing interest in being burdensome
no, they should not, we don't make you guys learn spanish!!!!!!

LORETTA: I'M A GIRL AND PROBABLY PRETTIER THAN YOU. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.JUST BECAUSE I STAND UP FOR WHAT I BELIEVE DOES NOT MAKE ME A GUY. BUT IT DOES MAKE YOU A RACIST.

FAITH: ENGLISH IS NOT OUR LANGUAGE!!!!!!!

PROUD TO BE MEXICANA!!!!!!!!
They should for terms of learning how to communicate were they living! But it shouldn't be mandatory because there are inmigrants that come here very old that can't really learn.
of coarse they should and what you need is English
Yes
Yeah, isn't it great to hear Glitterflip spew her anti-American hatred in English...
yes.. anyone that wants to live in this country should learn english. Im not saying never speak your first language, but you need to know the language when you live in a country. We need to stop making everything bilingual in this country and allowing people to live here to be here without learning english..
It should be encouraged and if the 12,000,000 undocumented immigrants are allowed to adjust their status to "legal residents" then the expectation should certainly be there. Like with prior immigrants, the second generation is usually bilingual, if not strictly English monolingual, that should NOT be a concer with this government, and it's not. Anyone who has studied college linguistics or has a good education knows learning a second language usually takes 7 years if practiced in an academic setting. For most immigrants (spanish speakers) not in this group, it would take longer, and may be more difficult - but their kids and their kids and their kids will be all Americanizedddddd ---
Hon have you looked at your question?Wouldn't you make a better point if an American could spell and also mandatory DOES mean must.
Absolutely they should speak English! Signs should also be written in English in immigrant neighborhoods. Despite ordinances legislating this, you still see non-English signage in many areas. Try this scenario on for size: someone is shot in an attempted robbery. There is a 9-11 call from a cell phone. The emergency crew takes longer to get there because the sign on the store is not in English. The victim is in bad shape due to excessive blood loss attributed to the extended arrival time. The victim and witnesses speak limited English if any. It is impossible for the crew to assertain the extent of the injuries, get a history or communicate with the people on scene. They do their best but the victim dies.
This is not a hypothetical - it has happened. My husband was an emergency medical technician for one of teh largest departments in the country. You cannot expect EMS to speak Vietnames, Korean, Thai, Spanish, Swahili and a dozen other languages.
Had that victim spoken English, had the signs been in compliance with local ordinance . who can say. He may have had a chance.
This is more than a tug of war between cultural identities. This is about the public safety. It is about being American, not just have a mailing address here. It is not about political votes. When politicians start requiring children to speak English before starting in public schools then maybe we will have made some progress but I'm not holding my breath.
Yes and Yes.
Yes. We can't go to a foreign country and demand that they speak English. I'm tired of dialing 1 for English, 2 for spanish, 3 for Chinese. You want to be in America, speak English.
I don't see what people like you have against people who speak other languages. hmm I wonder why everyone that answered instantly assumed you were reffering to mexicans. though you probably were. anyhow, when you take the test to become a citizen, you do have to know english, along with the pledge of allegiance, the past presidents, etc. my mom took it and passed with flying colors. after she took that test she never spoke another word of english. so even if the government were to force all immigrants to learn english, what would that do? they would still speak in whatever language the choose.
no, but i think you need to learn how to spell "englinsh"
Of course, in this country we speak English, if the immigrants do not want to do so, then go home. It has to be a law.

The mexicans think they belong here, they want to change our laws and want to come here for free, but they are nothing but ALIENS

if they are so proud of being mexicans what are they doing here then?
sure if you wanna live in America you need to learn the language.
Englinsh?? no, hahahaha
it should be mandatory and a must to speak English. eclipse don't pay the glitz any mind, i think she is really a he. a troll.
Yes & yes. And I agree with loretta...
Should all Americans be forced to learn Algonquian?
QUE???
Yes I believe that if you cant put forth the effort to learn the language of the country you are relocating to then you obviously don't have much to offer to that country.
We all need to communicate and the best way is to have one language. Yes we all should speak English fluently.
If they expect to live here, yes, they should be required to learn to speak the language of the land.
I have visited France on frequent occasions, and there is a possibility that I would love to live there someday, so I elected to take four years of high school honors French, knowing I would appreciate it later on in life. After building on that knowledge of the language and speaking it as often as I could, I am thoroughly fluent in the French language today. If I were to live or simply visit France, I would expect others to expect me to speak their langauge, not cater to my handicap and speak fumbled English!!

Welcome To America: Speak our Language, or go home.
As a citizen, born and raised here like the generations before
me, I know from the stories of accomplishment I've read of
people who legally came here across the Atlantic, through
the harbor of New York, and saw the 'statue' waiting to welcome them into these United States. These people didn't
come here just to earn the American dollar. They were following a dream. A dream of freedom. A dream of ending a life of poverty, or a lack of not having religious freedoms. Those who were sick when they arrived in the bowells of the ships, were turned away and returned to their native country. Those who walked down the gangplank onto the docks, didn't have any translaters waiting. With luck, maybe a relative was waiting, who'd come over many years before. So they had a sponsor, a place to live, and be fed until they
too could make it in this new and wonderful land.
Learning English was mandatory for survival then. In order
to work, you had to speak the national language, not the one
you spoke when arriving from the mother country you repre-
sented. So many stayed in the city of New York, living in one
of the burroughs where people from their old country assim-
ilated into the core of the citys' residents. But many others
who were brave enough took to the rails and headed west.
Some didn't make it that far, and settled on the prairies to
farm with other immigrants from other countries. Slowly they
had to learn English to enable themselves to be part of this
new land of freedom and understand one another. There was
no question of who would learn the others native language.
Or allowing one group of a nationality to not have to speak
the language of the country known as America. Everyone had
to learn English, it has always been and hopefully always will
be the national language as long as there are proud citizens
who will fight verbally in our courts and from the highest
hilltops to be heard. We must protect our rights as we now
can see they are slowly ebbing away. We must remember
that this country is known as a Melting Pot of many cultures.
We all must get along as US citizens are expected to do.
And if our government deems it a law to speak English as
the national language, I'm sure the people will be behind
this law as no one should favored above any other group
or singular person.
