New rules for immigrants..?

There has just been a report on the news that immigrants who are living in the U.K. must learn to speak English or will lose their benefits.

I personally think this is right as how are these people able to communicate and live here if they are unable to speak the language - this would be essential for them to work aswell.

What are your thoughts on this?

Answer:
MRS.JONES you need to calm down love, dont act like you know everything. if what you say is the case then how come every shop i walk into the person serving cannot speak a word of english? i have to ask atleast 3 times for what i want before they understand! and when i walk down the street every foreigner i pass is jabbering in a different language. Good for you for speaking all different languages but please understand that 80% of foreigners living in england DONT BOTHER.
I totally agree!!! It's just ignorant that they come over here not speaking the language and then expect to sponge off on benefits! About time I say.
About time to!

I would have taken it a step further - learn English or here's your plane ticket!

Funny though isn't it - they all know how to fill out benefits forms and where to go to get the forms!
Most people can speak English, it's an easy language to learn, so it won't be a problem for most.
i hadnt heard that but fair do in my book
Good Idea a no brainer, now lets stop kissing *** and enforce or apply it.
a bit of spin put out by the goverment just to keep us happy, they will NEVER enforce it on one person mark my words.
I have a feeling this is just being used to cut as much benefit as possible from the treasury. But the vast majority of claimants of unemployment benefit speak English as their first language so this isn't going to make much difference is it?
So it`s the lack of Englsh when i say Good morning and get no reply?.
immigrants can NOT get benefit! asylum seekers get benefit! i work and pay tax like you! and i know English very well and 3 more languages too! when they are giving you immigration visa they are giving you English test if you r good you get visa! and on the visa it says not allowed to get public funds.
Whats the betting someone will say it's against their human rights?
I think if you go and live in a country the least you can do is to try to speak the language and fit in to their way of life.
Its about time, this govermaent make it hard for us but so far they have been given an easy ride on our backs. Kick the lot out
I dunno about benefits and stuff... I just think it's sad that government policies must be imposed to make people learn English. If people choose to immigrate and live in this country (as I did), I think it should be natural that such people should learn the language and local ways . If they don't, what's the point of choosing to live here??? My wife is struggling with English, but at least she's making an effort and trying hard.
If there are immigrants just here to suck on public funds (funded by my tax money!!!), I think such people should be made to leave.
I agree, i don't see the point in allowing non English speaking people to come to the UK, it is an English speaking country and if everyone is supposed to integrate how can we get to know people that don't speak our language, it's a bit of a farce don't you think?
I think its absolutely right. Not being able to speak the language is stopping many from working who are otherwise fit and healthy. Its a long overdue decision.
Yet another government soundbite.

If someone pays UK taxes and works for a living, they are entitled to benefits.....that's the system.

I'm not suggesting that people shouldn't be encouraged to learn the language, but using benefits as a weapon seems both cowardly and ineffective, because the alternative would be a lot of non-English people running around stealing, whoring and mugging people.

A far better way would be to rid the country of bogus asylum-seekers and illegal immigrants, but they lost count of them.
Most of them shouldn't be here. We have deliberately failed to use our existing immigration controls to prevent many of them coming in.

However, we are where we are, so yes, they should definitely learn to speak English. To not do so is an implied declaration 'that I am not going to integrate', I am going to transport my culture to your country, and you can go to h--l.
Completely agree!
It is good.
I agree with you 100% EMA. Unfortunately immigrants can live in this country and work without knowing English. Many of the people that do not speak English have low paying jobs as janitors or maids in hotels. Just the other day when I was trying to ask someone for help they told me "no speake English" I wanted to ask her "then how did you get this job". In Florida you can get a drivers license, passport, or any type of government paper work or license without knowing English. It has gotten so bad that if you live in Miami and are not bilingual you cannot get a job believe me I was qualified, but anytime they asked me if I was bilingual and I told them "no" I already knew I was not getting it. That is part of the reason I had to leave Miami. Yes, Yes Yes, if someone wants to live in this country it should be mandatory to learn English.
In 100% agreement with you. And I am not a racist,
I totally agree!! Wish they would do the SAME here in the states!!
I am sooooooo glad to hear the government are trying to do something positive for all the hardworking people of this country that have put into the system for years. Maybe our pensions will get raised and the NHS will get more put into it - exactly where the money should have gone in the first place. What made the government think these people were entitled to benefits in the first place???

Hey just had a thought. If they lose their benefit, I bet you the government give them money in a different way.

Remember, when you're taken off unemployment benefit, your social security benefits are raised. Hope the government aren't trying to con us.
I completely agree, but half the English can't speak properly anyway!
But, I agree with what you say!
