In today's news 40,000 people claim poor English stops them from working, are these people British?
Answer:
I am an American who is living and working in the UK, and married to a British national (born and bred). I would never consider myself to be British despite being able to speak the language and my understanding of the culture. I think if people can only truely be the nationality they are born to, as the cultural impressions they form when in childhood will shape the future adult they become.
This being said, if someone wants to make the effort, learn the language, immerse themselves in the culture and raise a family as 'British' then they should have the rights of British people. Unfortunatly too many people think that simply by moving into the country they are entitled to call themselves British and have all the rights and honours of British nationals.
ha that is funny
'we're all immigrants in one way or another. Most peoples views in this country are governed by whatever newspaper they read and unfortunately that's the sun (Conservative). So the vast majority read the views of the Sun which is right wing. Problem is people don't even know they're being influenced. Read something subjective which isn't easy to do, the guardian's probably the only one left.
English is one of the factors necessary for naturalization into the USA, along with some rather remarkable civics and history questions (given in English). Granted, it's pretty much a rote memorization test, but at least you're literate if you pass the test.
Perhaps the Brits could learn from us Yanks?
You're making no sense.
"Clearly, even the ability to speak English does not automatically provide the "right" to be British".
The whole point is that these people CANNOT speak English.
they are today's under 21's, who speak like this, ''dis iz da life, me n ma peeps 'angin round da streets givin' it big to da homeys fwom da udder side'' isnt todays education system fantastic?.......if youre still proud of todays britain then good luck to you!!!
You are so right, let us stop insulting the British people.
Iv'e never heard of a Briton that does'nt speak the native language, so were do we go from there.
If poor English stops these immigrants from working then they should be kicked out of the UK and stop wrecking our economy!
In the news the other day a large company and employer said that they bin 30 % of applications from British people (all with degrees) because they can't write English to a good enough standard.
A friend of mine working at the job centre said to me that most of the people he is trying to get a job cannot read and write properly.
The Times did a test of1000 people in London about 6 years ago.
They gave people an article to read and asked them to point out the errors. Only 3 people got it 100% correct 2 were South African and 1 was from another African country ( they did make sure that there were around 50% locals in the survey.
Maybe the immigrants are making us all speak badly
To morgy Sam said "even the ability to speak English" This means ALSO HAVE the ability to speak English. It refers to OTHER people not those mentioned as the 40,000 scroungers.
YOU should learn English or have your benefits stopped
i agree with Tom S. If UK stops these immigrants from working then they should be kicked out of the UK & stop wrecking our economy. Besides, some people who are born here & can't speak in English. These people should be kicked out of UK or undergo an English test. Australia is implementing this rules.
The point of this issue is that to live in another country you should have a good command of the native language as in Britain you should be able to speak English. I think that in this country it has been accepted for to long that you can get by quite good without it so any change where it has to be a rule that "to live in England you Have to speak English" is long overdue.
i think if you living in UK its good to call yourself British.i think it shows you love where you living and proud to be British.its not nationality theft. you can not tell people what they should call themselves.against the human rights.because they r not born in UK they r not less human than you
Sam, I think these people should work for the benefits agencies cos they know more about the system than us real Brits!
This is just a poor excuse for people who have it really easy -
If they don't speak English they should be asked no TOLD to leave!
What other country do you know you can turn up with no id,no money and get free housing, free education, free NHS and get money in your hand every week?????
Thats why we are no1 choice for immigrants worlwide.
USA on the other hand is very hard to get into.
do you know what are you talking about?Cause I don't!
all i gotta say is that if you come from another country and want to live here in britain you get a job or buiy a buisness to provide more jobs not come over here get a council house sign on in the doll office get your giro and free clothing and cars, because a true brit works for there home and money and that goes for all you dole bludgers that are british but cant get offf your backside if you dont get a job i think you should be deprted too this country has had enough of lazy individuals who only want handouts.
If they can't speak the language why are they here?!? I wouldn't go to live in a country where I didn't understand the language!
