Is an "English Only" sign offensive??
An owner of Geno's Steaks in Philadelphia has come under fire for posting a sign "This is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING 'PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH"
I say he is 1000% correct!! What are your thoughts??
If you disagree please give me clear reasons why.

Other immigrants had to learn English as part of living in this country and anyone that is too lazy to learn should go back to their native country and continue to live in poverty. The people who object to learning English are the same ones that take public assistance and use our medical system at the expense of those that understand English. English learn it or leave would be my sign.

I agree, i posted a question the other day about people only speaking spanish in big chain stores like gnc(the place that sells the vitamins and stuff) and in subway and stuff..thats dumb. It should be required to speak english because thats not fair and its annoying and rude. If I go to mexico id speak spanish to them..
and its not just spanish speakers that do this but theyre the main offenders....so SAD...really sad!
I agree with you for the simple fact English is the national language. When you go to another country they expect you to speak their language. they don't conform because of your lack of knowlage. either you speak their language or your just outta luck.

It's a form of discrimination, hidden behind patriotism.
While I agree that there is little incentive for foreign cultures to learn the standard English language, it is still wrong to phrase a demand like that.
It would have made a better point to simply say "When ordering, please speak English."

I agree 2000% .....if immigrants want to come to our english speaking country then they should learn how to speak Enlgish PROPERLY BEFORE they come !

i once said "gracias" when a mexican gave me my taco bell order and the dude said "i speak english man!" so maybe theyd be insulted that geno's owner thinks they cant speak english in the first place
If it is, then the USA immigration department has a problem. The new law nows says that in order to become a US citizen, you must learn English and understand it. If Geno is wrong so is the USA.
His sign says

Hmmm. He quoted that he doesn't refuse business from non-speaking customers. He just has the sign there to make a point.

It is a bit IN YOUR FACE, but I do agree with him. I know we are a land of many races, creeds and origins, but if you are going to live in this country, you have to learn to speak the language. I would never move to another country and then not learn to speak their language. Why should the whole country change for a handful of people? It shouldn't. I am not saying to leave your culture or language behind and forget it. I am saying learn the language of the country you are living in to get along and be able to function in that society. Good for Mr. Geno's Steaks.

I agree with you that those upset have perverted the "Freedom of Speech" portion of the constitution. Which was written in English not Spanish. When I have travelled into Mexico I try to speak their language and pay for items with Pesos. I do this out of respect for their country and culture. Refusing to learn English and use American Dollars is disrespectful to my country.
I guess he is correct to a degree. you might get people who can't speak a word and want something but can't make you understand and if you bring out the wrong order they may get upset. If they can point to the menue with pictures then I suppose they should be able to get what they want.

You are 100% correct. This is America and here the word is english. If they can't learn to speak our god given language, then as far as I am concerned, they should do without. Again, this is America, not Mex, Italty, Germany, Japan or any other country. Speak out or leave. By the way, their SS checks will be printed in english along with their DriLic, school text etc etc.
Although this is the USA and the primary language spoken is english we still have to remember that we are infact a "LAND OF IMMIGRANTS." Is he right for posting that sign, possibly, will he lose business probably. Just because a person does not speak english doesn't make him or her any different, everyone gets hungry therefore everyone needs to eat. I think the store owner is ignorant and he needs to realize that people are people no matter what language they speak.

If this is how you feel, please be very aware that you should NEVER travel outside English speaking countries. How rude of you to go to Greece and order a meal in English! You must be fluent in Greek in order to go there!
Why the hell are Americans so bent on making the entire world bend to what they feel is "right"? Most of the world is forced to learn English in grade school, while for Americans learning a foreign language is an elective in school.
We are considered bullies to the rest of the world. Wake up and notice that there are BILLIONS of people on this planet that are not American.
