Although many people in here are mostly criticizing you or saying " duh" you'll be surprised about the number of people who think all Latinos are Mexicans or that all illegal immigrants are Mexican also. Maybe they do know that's not true, but they unconsciously don't put into practice what they know.....if that makes sense.

Who thinks that?? Usually when I see a Mexican, I refer to them as a Mexican, or if I see Puerto RIcan, I refer to them as Puerto RIcan. If I am addressing a group of mixed people of Spanish decent I guess I would call them all Latino or Hispanic...

What in the world would make you think that we don't know the word "Latino" encompasses a number of Countries?
Lets just start with Spain, the first country to land on American shores by sponsoring Christopher Columbus in 1492. The Spanish married many of the native Indians in this country, thus the Hispanic or Latino. All of South America is Latino, Cuba, Puerto Rico; just to name a few, there are more but perhaps you should do some study into your own culture.

mexican. and yet these same people claim they can tell the difference between a legal citizen and an illegal one.

There are the people from El Salvador ( who hate being called Mexican), the people from Honduras (who hate being called Mexican), the people of Chile (who hate being called Mexican) , the people from Puerto Rico (who hate being called Mexican) .... and here's a news flash. Many second and third generation Mexicans do not speak Spanish, do not want to live in Mexico, and they will tell you they are Americans... not Mexicans.
