Has anyone recently completed a permanent resident process for a spouse...?
Answer:
My wife came from Australia on a fiancee visa and as I recall, the process is that once the embassy receives the application from the Service Center, it will be several weeks for them to process it. They will contact your husband by mail to make an appointment. It sounds like that hasn't happened yet. The appointment will probably be a couple weeks after he receives the notice. He will get the visa at the appointment and can then travel to the US.
When my wife went to her appointment, the embassy asked if I was there. She told them that I wasn't able to get away from work and it didn't seem to make any difference in the embassy interview.
There are web sites out there that talk about experiences people have had. I would suggest you research those because the two of you will have a long line of paperwork to look forward to on the road to permanent residency and citizenship. The I-130 was proably the easy part. These web sites will also give you hints about getting a work permit at the port of entry, getting a SS number, etc.
Good luck!
A follow up based on the second reply. If you have been notified by the Service Center that your petition has been approved and the application sent to the Lima Embassy for processing, then you'll be ok.
When you are married outside of the US the US does not have to recognize your marriage as legal or valid. Several of my family members and friends have been married outside of the US and none of them were allowed to bring there spouse to the US legally. I think that you need to be prepared to live in Peru if you want to be with your spouse.
One of my good friends married outside of the country and they filed with INS; complied FULLY and completely with INS for over 4 years, they spent $7000.00...and he was denied for No reason at all.
INS led them to believe everything was going to be fine. Perhaps it is fine for INS but not for my friends.
