The sponsorship is to get permanent residency. The form that you have to fill as a sponsor is the I-864 Affidavit of Support Under Section 213A of the Act. This form is a CONTRACT between the sponsor and the US government.

I advise you to print out the entire form ( 19 pages) and read it from top to bottom. There is a part that says that if the sponsor does not fulfill his/her obligations the intended immigrant can sue the sponsor for this support. It says many interested things. Just read it.
