Why do many immigrants from third world countries call themselves "British"?
Answer:
People from India and Pakistan and Muslims from the highly successful Muslim world are not British, the Empire was disbanded more than half a century ago and in any case even then they did not have British citizenship.
u r only british if you are born here
ooh you're stirring up a can of worms here!
because tony blair and his cronies have disolved the very notion of being British as it is apparenlty politically incorrect.
There is no such thing as british anymore, we are all just toys for new Labour.
unlike other countries, Britishness is an attitude rather than a specific nationality or skin colour. If people moving to the UK want to be included as British then why not? It promotes inclusivness and makes for a stronger society
the British went around the world occupying, stealing, and enslaving native populations. Now because of those countries being ruled by the British, many of those people have moved to England. If England can justify invading half the world, Im sure there is no problem with immigrants justifying calling themselves British.
You call yourself whatever is on your passport. Presumably the German woman had retained her German nationality. Who cares ? What's your point ?
I see what you mean and unfortunately it is a can of worms
In Bristol we have many people from one country inparticular who claim to be British but really take the pee but not working and demand everything for free!
Yet we have many Polish settled here (who work bleedin hard compared to the first ones I mentioned) and still say they are Polish. The same with Jamaicans, Indians and Pakistani's. They must be proud of their roots like we are.
Thumbs down or up then??
The people who call themselves British (so called 3rd world) are naturalised citizens. EU nationals who choose to live here can retain their own nationality without compromising their right to live here. God knows why any self respecting person would want to emigrate here when you see how quickly the racists crawl out from under their rocks whenever a question like this is asked on the net.
I don't get your question. But here's my response:
I am a US citizen, born in Texas. But my family heritage is Mexican. Three of my grandparents were also born in the US (their parents were from Mexico), one was born in Mexico and came here as a baby. Her parents were from Spain, so she is Spanish, but born in Mexico, and raised in the US and died an American citizen.
I consider myself Mexican American, because I am Mexican. And I was born in the US, as were both my parents.
Do you see how this can get complicated? Many people identify with their ancestry and race just as much as their present nationality and citizenship.
Cheekyegg: If both your pearents were born in the UK you have a birthright to be a British citizen no matter were your born.
This because when the British colonized these countries, the British established a government and all the citizens essentially became 'subjects of the Queen'. This made the citizens 'British'. They then get the rights to travel to UK as 'subjects of the queen' or British.
Germany is not a British colony, and the lady, as you say, is only a resident not a citizen.
Britain classes anyone who lives here British but I'm English theres a difference i was born here but did u also know that we wernt aloud to call ourselves English any more we are all classed as British its stupid
no wounder there is so much racism
An aside, I know, but what is British? Britain is not a country, a race nor even a nation. It is a recent, very recent (C19th?), concept. The nations that make up Britain are far more important concepts I think. Why do immigrants (not neccessarily from the third world nor even the second world as you state) not take the nationality of where they live e.g. English, Irish, Scottish or Welsh? This intrigues me as it seems to imply that the English etc are races rather than merely a group of United Kingdoms (and Principalities and Duchies) rather than one singular nation whereas the Germans are just that German rather than part of a diverse group of former Kingdoms etc that have merged to form Germany. I am not sure whether Britain is a healthy concept (see Northern Ireland and Scottish nationalism as but two examples) so why these immigrants get given this moniker is beyond me.
I agree with the lady talking about her dual nationality of Mexican American. Why do people just have to have one identity?
I live in England so I am English, not Scottish or Welsh. But like the Scottish and Welsh I'm British. I live here, my VAT I contribute through the economy goes to the British government and I vote here. I also have alot of Flemish ancestory so I feel that is a strong part of my identity because when I look in the mirrorr I look so continental. Life is complicated. But shouldnt people who contribute tax and vote in this society have this recognised instead of being excluded? Instead of the hostility that is so apparent to others, especially since 9/11, I really believe the way forward is focusing on what we have in common, not how we are different.
And it is a myth that even white pure bred "British" people are entirely British. When analysing peoples genetic history it is extremely normal for genes from eastern europe, the middle east and Africa to be detected in the majority of British people. We are not a purebred race.
There is also the issue of the Commonwealth. The Queen is on so many coins accross the world and is other countries head of state. British identity to some extent is installed in other cultures.
Because now they are proud/ashamed of this. depend on the circumstances
sound like to me you believe people that move to UK should never be call British!!!
look here my mother is from Cayman Islands not a third world country by the way standard of living is higher then United Kingdoms, it's an British overseas territory guess her citizenship if she moves to UK?
You are quite wrong in that. British is the term for nationals of this country and is NOT associated to a particular tribe or race. Indigenous tribes or natives of Britain are the likes of Welsh, Scottish, Cornish etc. But any one who was born here or who has taken British citizenship is a British subject and are called British be they from Pakistan or Africa or the USA.
On the other hand, someone who has worked here like the German lady but has not changed nationality is still German. It is not trickery. But the thing to understand is that British is the general term for people who are part of this land.
Well well, a pointless question indeed!
I believe that everyone has the right to call themselves what ever they want... like some here say "Britishness" is an attitude and it also does promote inclusiveness and harmony with different cultures. However, it has lost its meaning because people only call themselves "british" when it suits them and not to actually try to live in harmony with one another.
If you take a look at France, no one goes around asking you if you are "French" because as a young person , the nationalism and patriatism is instilled in you and you truly feel "french" , therefore you are pround and society is very inclusive.
So in conclusion, I do believe in "britishness", but dont just say it , actually mean it and feel proud of it so that everyone DOES get along and feel good for one another.
You are so lost dude, why cant you get your facts right, undersand it if any person from third world country takes citizenship of Britain, than they have no other choice than to call them Britishers,
I don't understand your question. Are you implying that Germany is a third world country? It's not.
i am english/ british whatever you want to call me, i was not born here, i was born in berlin, germany, but thats because my father was in british army, but i have lived here since i was 3 months old. my parents are also british, my dad from manchester, my mother from cumbria. now my daughter on the other hand, her father is iraqi kurd, my daughter was born here is being raised here, she is classed as a british citizen, but some people see her as dual national, even though she has never been to her fathers country, and as civil war has broken out there, wont be going to visit in the near future. What do u class her as?
My husband came here 6 years ago and has never claimed that he is british and never would, he is proud of his nationallity and only came here because his life was in danger.
I dont really care what people call them selves, as long as when they come here they abide by the rules of the country that they are in and dont try and sponge off the state that we pay hard earned tax money to.
if it would be other way round you would ask why they dont call them self British!!dont they live in UK!!! i dont get your question!!
In response to curious cyrus racist post. Not all of us black males are muggers. Are all white men paedophiles? Course not. Also with reference to us marrying white women. Maybe it is because these women keep meeting imbeciles like yourself and want to broaden their horizons.
Haven't got a clue, especially when so many can't speak the British language (english)
she is probably still a greman citizen-it is very hard for germans to gain dual-citizenship and many of them don't want to give up their german citizenship.
