Will police caution cause deportation?

I am an international student studying in UK. I was given police caution on theft 6 months ago becuase of picking up a mobile on floor without returning it. I gave it back to owner after the arrival of police, and honestly admitted picking up his phone. I would like to know will this caution cause deportation??? thanks !

Answer:
No. The police caution is a conviction. It means that as it was your first offence, and it was not a violent crime, and as you admitted it, etc etc you just got a slap on the wrists. But you do now have a criminal record, and you have been convicted of a crime.
If you are not a resident here, ie. on a visa, you should have been served with an IM3 form, which tells the Immigration board that you have been convicted of a crime. Get two of these forms served on you and you can be deported. If they forgot to serve you with this form then you are alright. It must be served at the police station at the time of receiving the caution.

In response to your e-mail, if you can't remember, then you probably were not served with the form. You would have been contacted by the Immigration service to warn you. The form you signed was probably accepting the caution and admitting the offence because you do not have to sign the IM3.
We can but hope.......
It depends on your immigration status. If you have overstayed, then I wouldn't answer the door when they come knocking. Alternatively, just go back home of your own accord. We have enough thieves of our own in the UK without foreigners joining the club.
Not necessarily. You returned the item back to the owner. No other punishment should be applied.

If you find another phone, call any of the numbers in its directory, and ask the person if they know to whom that phone belongs and give them your name and contact info so the owner can claim it back. Honesty opens doors.
No. Since last summer, because of pressure about foreign prisoners being released rather than deported, there has been a policy of deporting foreign prisoners at the end of their sentences, althogh this is not always possible.

Otherwise, convictions do not lead to deportation unless a judge makes an order. However, the Home Office may well take them into consideration when looking at any future application, for example to extend a visa.

From what I can understand, a police caution is not officially a conviction, although it will be recorded. It is unlikely that a caution would affect future applications too seriously.

Good luck
