If his visa has been expired for a year already, then there is no way in hell that he will be able to stay here legally now.

He is an illegal immigrant, he has broken the law, that makes him a criminal and will not get residence in the UK, and I hope your visa is in order or you will be getting a visit from me or one of my colleagues, our job is to find people like your friend and deport or imprison them, his best option is to go back of his/her own free will.
