Marrying an Indian In India and living there what type of visa?
Answer:
Darlene, just wanted to say good luck! I am also an American, married to an Indian and currently living in India. I don't think I can directly answer your questions, however. I have a US passport (as do our children) and we also all have OCI cards (the new "Overseas Citizen of India" card). As a person married to an Indian national, you qualify for the OCI card but they do take some time to process. I believe they are issued very quickly in the US. If I am not mistaken, the OCI card is almost but not quite a dual citizenship. I can stay in India, work in India and don't need any additional documentation.
When I went to India for our wedding it was not with the intention of staying on at that time. So I had a US passport with a regular tourist visa, got married in India, left to US, got married in US also (to same man!), years later got my OCI card and moved to India.
One thing you do want to be careful about is what law you get married under. As you probably know, there is a Hindu law, Muslim law, Secular law, Christian law... Your rights and the requirements for the marriage vary drastically from one to the other.
Good luck and all the best!
