Can you work while waiting for a decision on your Green Card?

I have two friends who were able to work for an American company while waiting for their Green Card applications to be be processed. Neither of them had work permits previously. Is this normal? I'm a foreigner myself and considering applying for a Green Card. I have no owrk permit and I am currently freelancing for a UK company (I'm British) and living in New York. Would I be able to be employed by an American company while I waited for my application to go through?

It depends on your visa type. Additionally, an Employment Authorization Document (I-765) must be submitted and approved before you are eligible to work for a U.S. company.

Refugee/Asylee, Certain Nationalities, Foreign Students, Eligible Dependents of Employees of Diplomatic
Missions, International Organizations or NATO, Employment-Based Nonimmigrants (work visa), and Family-Based Nonimmigrants are listed on the form as valid categories for applicants.
It depends on the status of the green cards, and if they have any restrictions???

Legally no. And if your are caught they will deny you application. But people do it all time without getting caught.
If you have the employment authorization card, if you dont then its illegal, it would make your chances higher of getting in to that company if you had already applied for a Green Card and have proof of it..... My own experience
