from 1990,when serbia closed all kosovar institutions for albanians,it was state teror and the victims where albanians.more than 80% of them where suspended from work,schools were closed for albanian children,every third albanian was one way or another abused by serbian police and it was sooo hard to get even the birth certificate?!myself,i had big dificulties for registration of my son born in 1997.they didn't ''liked'' his name Bardhyl,we can't spell it-they said,change the name!i didn't changed it,'cause its the oldest albanian name ,from written documents more than 2400years,and in english it means white star.but,i couldn't register his birth!
i don't wanna go on explaining all stupitidies of serbians(in fact i try hard to forget them).
serbia did everything to discourage albanians for living in kosovo,but we have very strong ties with kosovo,and we managed to survive.they tryed to displace albanians during the war,and they deported more than 800000 albanians in neighboring states,but they failled,'cause albanians came back.
and now,they're offering us autonomy?!!after all that we've been through?they just can't be seriouse.our full independence is only inches far.in fact ,we are independent now,its only the matter of time to became independent de jure.
p.s.my son is now registered ,and he got the name i have choosed for him:Bardhyl.

Having been married to, and thinking that she is the best thing on earth, an Albanian woman I know what you are trying to say and I agree. While the Serbs may think that they have some historic right to the land of Kosovo the fact is the Kosovars are the ones living there now. It would be nice if some peaceful solution could be reached that would allow for an open border in Kosovo to the south for Albanians and to the north for Serbs.
- Kosova deserves independence and that is what is going to happen.
The delusional serbs cling to Kosova as they're still in their weaning process and Kosova is their last transitional object.
The thing is that Kosova is not to be played with and they should grow up.
The serbs have lost the war, and their moral right to make a claim even for their history's sake.
The thing is that they hate traitors, and the fact that whoever will be the man who gives up on Kosova will be remembered and cursed for millions of years to come.
That is what the leaders fear the most. As they have tendencies to mythicise and preach so much - this is to be feared. On the other hand a great story is to be born.
This will be a bigger cause to celebrate (to those of u who don't know : Serbs celebrate their loss from Turks)

Anyway I do not see this happening because the Serbs in Albania need Kosovo for there resources . Without Kosovo Albania would be more poor then they are now , this is the reason they are killing people in Kosovo - to control the resources . Yes they justify it saying they are terrorists , drug dealers and traffickers of women and illegal organs but this is mostly nonsense , they kill them for resources or another words to sustain there economy or in simpler terms - for money .
We had discussed the demographic aspect before. As much as you may think you've hit the golden mine, you are still far. I do understand your ecstatic feeling though. I wouldn't mind having my own army in the neighborhood.
It is not political-historical practice in the world that a land belongs to someone who is physical majority upon the territory, to the point of self-determination. There is political difference between legal and demographic majority. It is common practice for such cases that a minority obtains certain rights. (Yugoslavia used to be a world example of minority rights.) The rights the Albanians are offered by Serbs; everything but a chair in UN, own army, etc. would satisfy a peaceful coexistence within the constellation existing at this moment, and would happen to be a larger autonomy than any legal minority enjoys today in the world. The strive for independence is the option of war, which is a natural option caused by the created disbalance.
The reality of things is that the disbalance which is causing this unique ridiculous constellation, is caused by USA, and not by what Albanian terrorism and police oppression, KLA, Milosevic or anything else did. USA is above any international law and therefore it assumes the role of creating the world to its own will. Their goal is nothing but the destruction of any threat to their aggressive expansionist politics. In such context, it is logical for the Albanians in Kosovo to seek beyond political means more than what had been given to them by those whose is the land - the Serbs. But still, this sadly only means death and destruction.
I do not know exactly what the fullest autonomy means. I could find out if that means to you, if you do not know already. You would feel like having your own country, except that you wouldn't have your own ambassador in Washington, a nuclear warhead facing Belgrade and Moscow, a toxic waste disposal, genetic soy, and similar things. I think that economically, you would be as much as independent within Serbia, and as near to EU as you would be going alone.
I will answer to the heart of your question once again: The thing is that Serbs and Albanians had been living in active harmony before the Albanians had decided to seek the devil hand of USA, similar to what happened to other regions in ex Yugoslavia. This brought death, destruction and depleted uranium. Otherwise, we would be enjoying our Schengen passports long ago.
I know that now you are under the drunken feeling of a no way back situation, and you are hypnotically pushing forward. You can not get rid of depleted uranium in Kosovo because that would cost too much money! You can not accept the offered autonomy because you would lose the historic chance of independence. You can not gain independence right now because Russia is feeling the threat of USA...
The only thing you can do is breathe full lungs and pray your children do not get leukemia at birth. Here in Serbia we have a problem with that. I can imagine how it is there...

Kosovo needs independence plain and simple, just like Montenegro. Serbia thinks they will forever own Kosovo, they need a reality check and be shown they do not and President Bush has even said he stands for Kosovo's independence.
The only tie the Serbs have to Kosovo is their resources. Take that away and Serbia will be hurt, but this could help Albania in the long run.

i will have to say that none of my family lived in kosovo or have lived there but as a albanian i will have to say , that no matter where my people live ,they are my people regardless!!
now that kosovo becomes part of serba they think that they own the people there ,whitch i say no they dont!! and you cannot kill the people that live in you so called land ( like the americans did to the indians)

it seems quite clear that serbia and kosovo will gain both indipendence from ultrantionalism and big serbia.But this wont go on for much since they will both enter the EU and so became again a part of a more big entity.
REplying to someone i'he to say that yes the first to emigrate from albania were prisoners,but they were political prisoners being in prison for they thought of freedom and democracy.A very little part of them emigrated the other laid the masses toward a liberal Albaina and they comprise the intelectual(even if this doesn't seem to have any atitude to the topic).Those you are talking about came after(which were a lot much more)and were mainly famished farmers and workers.
For tango may be!But this is not tango this is war and it doesn't mean to be fair or mutual.Anyway i've been in kosovo some 2 years ago and didn't feel this so called hate.May be because i was in the south far from serbia but anyway The hause where i stood had a young boy victim of the war but none of the family members had any hateful thought about any serb.And anoe friend of mine stood in serbia for 3 months(yes he didn't show to be albainian)but he didn't feel any preasure or other.Saying so it doesn't mean ther's love between the two but anyway from both parts there are radical and beligerous persons,lets hope they are a few and we'll have peace.

Almost nothing to add to aeiou_i's well researched answer, so just a line or two.
There's a lot of subjectivity in your question: "How the Serbs feel about the Albanians... According to most Serbs... " You seem to forget that it takes 2 to tango... BTW, this is NOT what the Serbs feel or think, it's a well known fact.
It's also no secret how the Albanians feel about the Serbs, is it? In other words, unfortunately, the love is mutual.
It's naive to say "the Albanians are there and most are born there, have homes and roots" because so do the Serbs.
What do the Serbs suggest? Serbia is big enough to integrate the Kosovo and Metohija non-Serb population. It's a slow process, but there are no shortcuts to reconciliation, we all know that. This is not propaganda, either. The unifying factor should be the fact that 70% people in K&M are now unemployed, and economic problems have no nationality.
edit - to user above: what are you really talking about? 'It takes 2 to tango' is a figure of speech which best illustrates that for every conflict you need two sides, and each has a part in it. If you're unable to see beyond the expression, I can't help you. It's preposterous to even think your views as a visitor could be valued more than the participants' in the war, as you said. Unless you, too, took part in it.
Just don't use any cheap Hollywood propaganda, please, about 'a young victim of war who doesn't hate his enemy'. Serbs are much more intelligent than you may think. And anyway, it's too early in the morning to puke.
This may not be inteligent and I may be completely wrong and being a Serb this most definately won't be objective.
Kosovo is a part of Serbia. To take it simply, Montenegro already got it's independance. Now imagine if every part of USA would want to break into completely independant courtries. This is a matter of pride, teritory and history. As for you who think that Kosovo getting independance would end up in celebration on Serbian behalf, please chosse better words. We have been under Otoman empire for around 500 years. They celebrated it. After they left it was already a common. Unlike some coutries (not planning to offend anyone) Serbia has long, hard history filled with long battles, seperations and loses. Perhaps this time people could let us learn from our mistakes better than to judge us. Come to Serbia. Go to Kosovo. After you know what it is like, bring you judgment.
Sorry that I didn't quite answer your question, but this had to be said.
Why do Serbs want to keep Kosovo? Well, there are quite a few reasons.
1)-Kosovo is a Serbian land and it was Serbian for centuries now. They're never going to give that up. If they do, Serbia will lose 22% of their population. This is not acceptable. Let me give you an example: California used to belong to Mexico and today, California is mostly populated by Mexicans. Why aren't Mexicans pushing for California to become independent Mexican country? Maybe it’s because they know what would have happened if they tried to go against the USA.
2)-Resources- there are a lot of natural, rare, resources down in Kosovo. Some of them are so rare that are only found in Kosovo and nowhere else in Europe.
3) - Half of our history is down there in Kosovo. We are not going to give up our sacred land to a nation of people who hate Serbians and their religion.
How did Albanians end up living in Kosovo? Well this goes back way back when we were occupied by the Turks. People from Albania used buy land in Kosovo from Serbians without the requirement of Serbian citizenship. And this was going on for centuries. Majority of Albanians paid the fair price for piece of land they received. Once Serbia noticed that Kosovo is being populated by a nation with different religion and different beliefs, Serbs decided to kick them out and re-claim the land. Same thing happened in Iraq. Wealthy American oilmen noticed how much oil Iraq has to offer, so they started buying lands and oil fields (without the requirement of Iraqi citizenship). When people of Iraq noticed that their land is rich with oil, which they no longer owned, they decided to start claming their land even though they sold majority of it to the West. But USA said no, no, no, we paid the fair price for the oil fields and will do anything to keep that.
All in all, Serbia needs Kosovo and they’ll do anything in their power to keep Kosovo.
And one more thing, people from Kosovo, Serbians and Albanians were on our side during WWI and WWII. They fought for and with Serbian forces against the Nazi’s. I don’t know what caused them to dislikes us now?
