We adopted a girl from China and are having trouble getting her citizenship. Can anyone help?
Answer:
You don't say exactly what your trouble is. Since you say the problem is with citizenship, I'm assuming you already have her in the US and she has been issued a green card. If you are citizens and she is under 18, then you can file form N-600 to request a certificate of citizenship. Citizenship is automatic, but you have to request the certificate as proof. The requirements are:
- at least one parent is a USC
- child is under 18
- child is legally admitted to the US as a permanent resident
- child is in the custody of the USC parent
- there is a final order of adoption
There are thousands of American children in foster care and group homes that would have loved to have had you as parents...no extra citizen paperwork required...
