Married a European, now how do I get her citizenship?

She came over on her passport for 3 months, the maximum. We got pregnant. So she came back on her passport and we got married at the county courthouse. Where do I go from here? If she goes back to visit her family, will she be allowed back into the US? How soon can we expect her to drive, work? What do we need to do?

Answer:
Ok, first do not let her leave the country, this is real important. She can not be deported due to the fact she is married to a US citizen in other words her status can be illegal and she can still file for residence.
Next fill out paperwork for conditional residence it cost about 300 dollars. In about 3 to 4 months you will have a invitation to go to the nearest office she will be granted a workpermit.About 6 to 8 months later there will be a interview and they will grant her the c residence.Dont worry about the interview its easy. She is from europe so no need to worry.
After that you apply for full residence It will come in the mail.
After 3 years of marriage she can fill out the paperwork to become a citizen. Now with the workpermit she can drive, work but not leave the country its too risky and inolves more paperwork and money and you are not 100% sure you can come back in with the c residence it schould be no problem.I can help you with the paperwork and any more q you have. For free.

I know all this because I work for the INS.
Good luck
its complex....get a good lawyer
You need to file form I-130 "Petition for Alien Relative" IMMEDIATELY. This form can be downloaded from www.uscis.gov. You need to do it before her tourist visa expires or she will be considered illegal in the US and will be forced to return to her country of origin while the paperwork gets processed. Once you file this petition she WILL NOT be able to leave the country and return on a tourist visa or the application will be rejected. She will be able to work as soon as the petition is approved, which takes 9-12 months on average. Check with your local Registry of Motor Vehicles to see whether they will give her a driver´s license now.

*You won´t need a lawyer unless her status becomes illegal. You can file the paperwork yourself and it isn´t hard.
