You answered your own question. You need to have your passport to go to a foreing country and then get back into the US. If you are here on a visa, you need to check with immigration before you leave or you may not be allowed back.

Wait...as a you are only a Legal Resident you can't get a US Passport. Maybe your residency card will work along with a second photo ID.
