Answer:
As long as your I-485 is pending and you filed it prior to your I-94 expiring, you are authorized to be in the U.S. and also to apply for work authorization. Also, even if you filed after it expired (as long as it was within 6 months of its expiration) you're ok.
Careful though. You can't file an I-485 unless your priority date is current.
EDIT: forget what I said about concurrent filing, premium processing was suspended
