Spanish resident?
Answer:
I'm from the UK and live in Spain, to become a resident you need to go to the national police station and get the forms for an N.I.E (national insurance number) and a residencia ( residence card),
The N.I.E. takes about 2 weeks to get and the residencia takes about 6 months. If you were to sell any of your properties with out being a resident you would have to pay a rather high capital gains tax 20-40% but if you were a resident you would pay the same as a Spanish citizen 3-10%, also being a resident entitles you to all the same things as citizens, free medical cover, credit cards, etc..
(you can only apply for your recidencia after you have your N.I.E)
However there are downsides to having a NIE and residencia. The biggest is that you go into the Spanish Government computer systems, and when it comes to red tape, the Spainiards are world leaders. What benefits you would get I don't know, but I am guessing that you own more than one property and get an income from the letting of one all the time, and maybe even the other some of the time. I am further guessing that you have a reasonably economical tax position from that income. Think very carefully before you expose your little nest egg to the scrutiny of the tax authorities in Spain as their powers are swingeing and they are used liberally and with little conscience.
