I think the common language (though in different dialects) is a misleading factor....anyway...blame the Mexicans for the bad rap!!
I don't but I am sure that many people do, I usually think of all of them as Latino. It is probably because the US has millions of illegal Mexicans so they lump together all of the countries as Mexican.
Why do you think all Americans don't know geography or don't know these cultural differences? Are you not guilty of making generalizations just as you're accusing us of generalizing?
Maybe cuz y'all look that same! And talk the same, don't say no on that one, we had an exchange student in hs that was from Ecuador, and if no one would have told me that i would have thought he was just another mexican.
they don't think they're mexican, they know that there are other countries in central and south america. mexican has just become a term often used to refer to all persons of hispanic descent because the vast majority of hispanic immigrants are in fact from mexico.
because they all speak spanish, are here illegally and are taking jobs over entire job infastructures and locking blacks and whites out! thats why pedro, thats why!!

the same reason that people assume that all black people are african american when in fact they just happen to be americans with a different color skin or jamaican and the list can go on. they assume, that's all. it seems people tend to put people into categories... i.e. african american, hispanic or white. people do not call me italian or german when in fact that is my background.

Americans think anyone with pecan tan skin is a Mexican.for alot of the schools just pass the kids and don,t teach that's why illiteracy is so high.
Who said Americans think they're all the same? Most illegals from south of the border are Mexicans? Why? Because the proud people of Mexco standing guard on the Mexican border, shoot, rape, jail, and kill the illegal aliens coming into their country. Are the Mexicans cutting down the competition?
No, I don't think that. I'm forever pointing out that there are illegal aliens, and legal immigrants, that aren't Mexican - check my profile if you'd like. You'll see that I speak of laws, not ethnicities. In my area, our illegal alien problem is actually Haitians and Dominicans. I speak Spanish, and I hear the different dialects all the time. But, I will say that you must have a narrow view of Americans, to make such a blanket remark. We actually know our geography quite well.
There are appromimately 320 million Americans. Not all of us think that way. I can't speak for the other 319,999,999 people, but I know geography pretty well, speak 3 languages (English, Portuguese, and Spanish). I think perhaps you talked to one ignorant American and assumed he/she represented the rest of us, which I personally find to be ignorant and offensive.

I get pissed when people refer to all Latinos as mexican. There is a HUGE difference between mexican and island Latinos. Now El Salvador, Nica and Honduras I can expect a misunderstanding.
MOST OF THESE PEOPLE HAVE TO PASS THROUGH MEXICO TO GET TO THE US, BUT MOST PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THAT THOUGH

We know geography. Better than any country in the world. You will eventually get your way. Your children or grandchildren will have the total equality you seek. Planet Latino. Or Planet Oatmeal and Flies. Or maybe you will not have a planet.
Because what they teach them in school is that the USA is the world and nothing else exists.
