Lets answer this question with one to you, just who do you think did these chores you mention before the illegal immigrants invaded this country. It all came together before, and as far as I can see, all the invasion did was to lower the working standards and wages of those that performed this work before.
I spent over 50 years doing construction work, and my last wage before retiring was over $25.00 per hour, and now thanks to these illegals the present local wage is down to under $20.00. And they are working without the benefit of overtime pay, so where are we ahead.?

I read that Amarillo is hurting for people to work there because the illegals have been rousted out. I would love to have those jobs but I can't get to Amarillo and don't know where to live when I do. I am neither lazy nor above such work, just located in the wrong state.

Yes we would, why do you think it's OK for people to break the law. If they are willing to break one law they wont have much problem breaking other laws. That is how corrupt governments like the one in Mexico get started. We don't need that here.
We are decimating the middle class in this country so pin heads like you can have a cheap gardener. I scrub my own toilet and mow my own lawn. And if what you say were even remotely true we could always raise immigration quotas so they will come here legally and assimilate into our culture.
Grow up we already had the day without a Mexican and guess what the world didn't come to an end. It was pretty nice, half the traffic of a normal day, we need more days without Mexicans.
Who would harvest the food? Many years before your time the corn was picked by hand, the potato's were dug up by hand, the oranges were picked by hand as were the apples. So along came a smart fellow and designed a machine to pick the corn and dig up the potato's faster than the men and women. Then came another fellow who designed a machine that would "Shake" the orange trees and apples trees and another machine would pick them up, These are now made into apple and orange juice. Back before the Civil war the "darkies" would pick the cotton, now a machine picks the cotton faster, so much for a history lesson.
Americans will do all that work when the pay is high enough.
Sure a peasant from a third world country who doesn't mind living in abject poverty is more motivated.
And a slave with a whip at his back would be even more motivated. So what?
This is not a legitimate argument, its an excuse. An excuse to maintain a pool of second class citizenry to support the lifestyles of the better off.
Americans went through a lot to correct the abuses of the gilded age. And Mexico never did get its act together.
Using illegal immigrant labor to force down American wages only helps to reverse that social progress.
Americans are not responsible for the terrible economic condition of the Mexican worker, and god willing will not be obliged to suffer the same condition ourselves, again.

Yes we would and to answer the rest, the citizens,that's who! I knew a lot of guys who were replaced by illegals in the construction business and they'd like their jobs back.
A lot of citizens were also lined up after the plant raids to get their jobs back. The list goes on and on.
People have already posted a similar answer, but I have to reiterate it because I get tired of the "lazy American" excuse to illegal immigration.
Growing up in a farming community, I worked in the fields picking veggies, baling hay (a penny a bale), cleaning the crap out of the barn, etc. I did this until I was 18 and was paid a whopping $2 an hour (in the latter years). It wasn't a lot of money, but I got by. One of my aunts worked in a canning company for many years along with other American citizens. Again, not a lot of money, but she got by. She couldn't have done that today because illegal immigration depresses the wages.
So the answer is that illegal immigrants are willing to continue working for slave wages. Why would they be willing to do that? Because it is better than what they could get in their home countries. If they were not here, Americans would do those jobs; just for more money. Money that they would spend on their house, cars, etc. Some of that money would stay in the American economy. Some would be spent on imports. The money made by illegal immigrants is sent back to the home country to support families. This certainly doesn't help America. Perhaps, with higher wages, some Americans could afford to save some money. That is something sorely needed in a country that has a negative savings rate.
This whole question is a smoke screen for those forces (business and Hispanic lobbyists) that want to control the outcome of the debate. America didn't get to its current economic strength by being lazy.
Yes, America would be a better place. All of your examples are duties that Americans do every day. Just because my family does not "cheat" when it comes to harvest time does not give Mexico a reason to invade America. Your question makes me militant!
are you yourself an illegal alien or come from a family with one or more? i don't mean to insult you; rather it sounds like you are trying to protect illegal aliens.
who would be doing the construction working? gee, american carpenters, excavators, road builders, home builders, plumbers, electricians, stone masons, brick layers, lumbar company workers of all sorts, and on and on and on have done such work in the past. they even had unions, which they fought to get. the unions carry pension programs. they also are forceful enough to get a strike going if their members are not paid enough to contribute significantly to the support of their families and to pay TAXES. unions also provide excellent health care packages for the union construction workers as well as for their family members.
therefore, i would guess that AMERICAN born contractors would do the construction work! and then, we would not have to fear one more state going right-to-work. because if one more state does that due to the cheap cash wages, without benefits or pension funds that illegal aliens are willing to kiss those employers' butts to get paid, then when illegal aliens become legal aliens, they won't be able to get union wages or benefits!
who would harvest the food, pick the food? who harvested food before our population topped 200,000,000? who farmed the land? farmers owned farms and hired workers when necessary to help them get the crops in and harvested. they made decent wages, except during the dust bowl years, until illegal aliens came here to work for far less. it's called the law of supply and demand. greater supply of cheap labor makes for demand for such cheap labor. now tell me this: when illegal aliens get legalized, what kind of wages will they want to support their families for the farming?
does it really matter anymore, actually? the extended family farm is practically dead in america. huge conglomerates of food production and packaging and marketing companies have purchased and do use illegal aliens to plant and harvest food cheaply, all the while paying illegal aliens substandard wages. so tell me this: how will americans afford feeding themselves when illegals become legal and want the good life too?

now then, consider this: who of the illegal aliens, when they come back here legitimate, but taking less than americans do for wages, will even be able to purchase all the goods that end up going over to malasia where workers get paid somewhere around $1.00 an hour, with no benefits whatsoever?
why do you think that americans are lazy? americans, just like anyone, love to WORK and to support their families. in addition, a man's work amounts very much to his feeling of self respect and self esteem. the jews say that the highest form of charity is giving a person a job just for that reason, not only for money. when people feel that they respect and love themselves for a job well done, they are happier people, therefore better citizens.

i can very well imagine our shutting down immigration COMPLETELY and ENTIRELY for at least 10 years until this country begins to, and continues to, take care of its OWN CITIZENS.

personally, i paid out i do not know how many thousands of dollars (over $100,000) in gaining education from high school forwards. do you think that i do not expect to make a decent living from doing all that work? screw this idea of making illegals legal! what do we want, we who were born here? we want our country solid, strong, powerful, and rich. and then maybe we will consider immigrants and maybe we won't. why mess with a good thing?
EDIT PER NICK'S answer: he's so right! what else is the truth is that illegal aliens not only legally collect food stamps and welfare and free legal aid and free medical care WHILE making minimum wage (in cash, not paying taxes like americans must--taxes that pay for all those freebies!) BUT that isn't enough for them! they forge multiple birth certificates, id cards, social security cards using numbers taken from the dead, driver's licenses and so on, in order to collect EVEN MORE benefits! i've seen them a thousand times in the grocery store: the women wear numerous solid gold and bejeweled necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, nose rings, toe rings and of course, THE CROSS !, while they la dee da around the food store in nicer clothes than i wear, their faces and nails made up perfectly, shoes new and clean, looking far too sexy to be shopping. they load down their grocery carts with the most expensive food, too, when we americans are forced to perpetually buy anything we need only "on sale." illegals don't: they buy anything at any price whenever they want. once they pay using their food stamps (how did they get so much?), they cart their groceries out to brand new cars, far better than my own and those of my american born friends! what a farce! get real! if you are one of them, why don't you leave?
