Spanish speakers must learn English, which is the De Facto language of America But do not or will not give up her language which is the bloodline of her culture.

My question is did all other immigrants give up their language to be accepted in America?

Answer:
Much of the US, about a third, used to belong to Mexico. In fact we took more than half of Mexico. We signed a treaty with the Mexican people who lived here promising that they would be able to keep their language and culture. In the west there are whole towns that are Spanish-speaking, and the people there have ancestors going back literally centuries, who have been speaking Spanish all this time. They have been here longer than your ancestors or mineI!

New immigrants often find it hard to learn English. However, of the American-born children of Spanish-speaking immigrants, 75% of them speak no Spanish at all!
no
of course not they continue to speak their mother tounge it's the later generations that lose the language
there were simply not enough of them to keep their language preseved over generations
There lazy and we do nothing but cater to them.
no, the fact that these languages are all spoken in the home proves that they did not give up their mother language. People speak whatever language they can conduct the business of their daily lives in, Spanish is just the first one that people have been able to speak in more than just a small area (ex. Chinatown) so it gets the most attention.
I could care less who spoke what and when, English is our National language now and if you don't want to or are too lazy to learn it, get the hell out.

English es numero uno.
It is about taking over America, just like Muslim extremists. Schwarzenegger is being made a bad guy by the "reconquista" extremists for saying undocumented workers should learn English. They can't stand the fact that America is not owned by Mexico and is not 100% populated by Mexicans only.

Why Do Both Muslim Extremists And Undocumented Workers Have Common Goals?
http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...

"Muslims extremists (like the terrorist Doctor caught in England) want to change Western Countries into lslamic countries, and Mexican undocumented workers want to change America into another Mexico. Mexico even funds anti-assimilation classes for undocumented workers in America. And Mexicans talk of killing Americans in order to take over America."

Mexico says they are taking over California: "We are practicing La Reconquista in California."
– Jose Angel Pescador Osuna, Mexican consul-general, at Southwestern University School of Law.

"We have got to eliminate the gringo, and what I mean by that is if the worst comes to the worst, we have got to kill him!"
– Jose Angel Gutierrez, political science professor at the University of Texas at Arlington.

"California is going to be a Hispanic state and anyone who doesn't like it should leave."
– Mario Obledo, co-founder of the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Education Fund, or MALDEF in a radio interview on KIEV.
In short, some did but most didn't. You should visit Ellis Island in New York City sometime. It provides a wonderful exhibit on the history of immigration to this country.

My wife is from Mexico. She moved here when she was 12, so she learned English in school. Her sisters, who didn't continue going to school once they got to the U.S., do not. However, all the kids that were born here do speak English. My great-grandparents moved here from Germany after WW1 and spoke little English, but their kids did. I suspect that it's always been that way.

Another point: there is nothing written in law that says that English is the official language of the United States. That's what so many states are trying to pass laws making English the official language of their respective states.

I live in Texas, so maybe it's just here, but many Americans can't speak, write, or spell English properly either. There have been studies that show that kids who speak more than one language do better in all areas of academics. They tend to have higher grades and do better on standardized tests. So, maybe those parents teaching the "mother tongue" has had some benefit for our country.
It's a mess here in L.A.. I made one rule at the last place I work. They are allowed to speak Tagolog as long as they don't talk about me. They violated numerous times. I thought I was being generous. Currently I have three assistants. THe 2 Filipino asistant is complaining the Armenian Assistant has a communication problem. I had to hold my laughter on that one. At least he tries. He actually knows 3 other languages.

They don't I go to alot a places where English is never spoken. It's a bit fustrating, but I do manage. I have been in stores where people only speak Chinese, Vietnamese, Farsi, Russian/Armenian, Spanish and Japanese. THe Reason Spanish is such a problem is that the more there are of those who speak SPanish, the less they need to learn English.
There is nothing wrong with speaking another language. Sadly, however, most Americans believe they can live perfectly well speaking only English. We, as a Nation, should emphasize learning foreign languages more.

Some families speak the language of their ancestrial homeland after three, four, or more generations. That is good. Nevertheless, English is the speaken, official language of the United States, and it should remain so. Alternatively, if the official language of the United States is to change, then we should all be required to learn it. A Nation has but one language. Please consider the following:

A key element of a Nation is a common language. All of America's major historical documents are in English. Therefore, the logical national language is English. To attempt to employ two or more "official" languages divides the Nation, which, unlike the colloquial usage, does not mean a state or country, it means something more: a group of people bound together as one through history, culture, customs, LANGUAGE.

America has done quite well assemebling a Nation bound together through the ideals of our Constitution. Our Founding Fathers did well: we are a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural Nation bound by the vision of an egalitarian society of human worth where a person is only restricted in his or her achievements by imagination, determination, and motivation. It's a vision, not yet fully a reality, but through the years we have made progress. Let it continue to be so.

People--families--should practice their traditions and, if they wish, speak whatever language they wish at home and among others who wish to speak the language. But, please,

Do not divide the Nation with language.
Speaking Enlish in the USA opens the doors of success and acceptance in this country. Those that decide they don't need to learn English will be left in poverty. Its your choice.
