Would you like or government to FORCE all USA people to speak English?
Would you rather live on the old Russia? and have the government dictate what is good for you?
Answer:
No I wouldn't. God help us keep this country free, not only from foreign dangers but from ourselves. We have so much violence in our hearts, it seems, it spills over everything.
The corporate media thrives on it. Politicians exploits it. What are we going to do?
Most countries in the world require that immigrants learn the language and culture before becoming citizens.
Cajuns are welcome to speak Creole and Puerto Ricans to speak Spanish, but we don't want to change our language to accommodate minorities. The language of government should be English.
Works for me!! If you go to a country that is predominately an English speaking country, you will have to learn it sometime or other to be able to make it. Doesn't mean you can't talk your native language at home or to friends. If I go to the country of YOUR origin, would I be required to learn to speak YOUR language or would everyone there learn English to cater to me? What is good for the goose is also good for the gander. If you don't want to cater to me, why should I cater to you when you come to MY country?
It is extremely arrogant to migrate to the US or any country for that matter and not intend to learn the native language. Yes, I would like to make it mandatory for a person to have a functional grasp of the English language prior to gaining citizenship.
Right on.
Just because you learn it doesn't mean you are being oppressed or anything. If you move to almost any other country in the world you would be expected to learn their language,
a country and its people function better if there is a common language. i know where you are going with this question and i don't think anyone is encouraging the outlaw of languages other than english. communication is vital to the survival of a community and we all want to survive and thrive. speak spanish or german or french but if you are going to live in the USA be able to speak and understand english. it will make your life easier.
Yep, I WOULD like them to start enforcing English as the USA's official language, starting with YOU, Sparky!
P.S. -Chandu The Magician called, he wants his picture back...
P.P.S.- Also image search Sargon the Sorcerer, Ibis the Invincible, and Lando the Magician.
I would like an official language of english. I do not want to force anyone to speak english, and if they choose not to learn english i do not want to hear any complaints that they are being left behind.
YES,YES YES YES YES
Every country has a language. If you want to live in a country successfully you need to know the language. Everyone who applies for US citizenship should do so in English, the language of the US. If a person speaks more than one language there is no problem as long as one of the languages is English. As a child I had Chinese friends who were straight A students. They went to school during the day and in the evening went to Chinese school where they learned their language and culture right down to the abacus. It was beneficial for everyone.
You can speak any language you like , just speak English when your talking to me and when I'm speaking to you in public , business or as a shop clerk .
You don't have to give up one language for another...or are "some" groups of immigrants that stupid? They can't retain their first language if they learn English?
America has always been an English speaking country. To function and get a head in this country, you MUST speak English!
While English may not "officially" be the national language, it basically is! You are being rather insulting when you compare America to communist Russia!
Forcing English would violate several of the treaties by which the USA incorporated new territories, the earliest being the treaty purchasing the Louisiana Territory from France in 1803, which guaranteed residents to right to continue to speak whatever language they wished. Of course, the USA has never had much trouble violating treaties, as many native nations might testify.
OTOH, barring lawyers from saying things like Res ipsa loquitur would be pleasant, and kids doing a bar mitzvah would not be able to read from the Torah in Hebrew. There would be a whole new federal bureaucracy created dedicated solely to deciding what is English. New words would have to be approved by the bureaucracy, subject to Congressional oversight. Eventually we might have to stamp out regionalisms such as Brooklynese as of dubious status as really "English". Sentence for the first offense using "ain't" 30 days and a $100 fine, going up for recidivists. Radio announcers on classical music stations would not be permitted to refer to "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" by name, and Spanish language TV would have to be beamed from across the border.
No. But I want the government to use English only in public schools, and require immigrants to learn English before it lets them become citizens.
Our government will never "force" any language on anyone. However if you desire to grow and prosper, not just in the United States but any country, it would wise to learn the native language. If not do not expect to be wildly successful. If I were to move to mexico and did not speak the native tongue than I certainly would realize I would be severely limiting myself to how well I could succeed. It's all quite simple. The idea that this is a hard reality to understand is just born of laziness and selfishness.
I think that they should force all illegals out of our country and then it would not be an issue.
BUILD THE WALL
How can people function together in society when they can't understand what the other is saying. If somebody wants to be a citizen of this country, they must learn the language. The only alternative to that is the citizens of the U.S. becoming multilingual. No thanks. I'm too old for that. I really don't care what language people use when speaking to their family or fellow countrymen.
I don't know if you've ever had to work with someone who doesn't speak your language, but it is extremely frustrating and you don't get a lot accomplished. I don't need the government to tell me that is not good for me.
America is an English speaking nation and as such all, immigrants coming to this country should speak English.
Every country has their language that is the language spoken by all.. The fact that you can speak whatever you choose at home or amongst friends etc..is called freedom however we still must resort to a central language for the nation to be as one and progressive.
as an immigrant i think we should learn english.
you see many people think that all illegals are ignorant but most of us would rather see a English learning programs on tv then all the soap operas.
America cannot and should not force anyone to speak any language, but if someone comes here (to the US) then they should adjust to the English culture...I eman majority rules.if I were to move to their country, I can't expect the entire country to adjust to my language, and change everything abut their language and culture. So, if someone comes to America and becomes a citizen here, they should learn English and keep their original language on the side, so to speak.
My Portuguese's friend speak three languages fluently: English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
As he repeatly says to me: Borders, language, and culture. These are the fundamental things in society. Without a defined border, language, or culture...a country will no-longer be 'a' country.
Sure, he'll speak the other languages at times, but most often he'll speak the language of this land...English!
I don't mind what people do at home, but for the vast majority of ones time...it should be spent understanding the nation you live in, not forcing your old way upon it.
