Australia still has the Union Jack on the flag because the British monarch is still our head of state although we have very few real ties with Britain nowadays. There is a debate which flares up every now and then as to whether or not we should get rid of the Union Jack and it gets very heated on both sides. The older Australians and the more conservative ones want to keep the flag as it is. The Aboriginal people and their supporters want the Aboriginal flag to be our national flag and there are a few other flags which have supporter groups too, like the Eureka Flag and the Boxing Kangaroo.
The USA made itself a new country when they created the declaration. They stated all the things that the King did that was unfair and they put in a president and ran things completely different.

We gained our independence from Britain 231 years ago. We are our own country! Many nations have similar colored flags. Liberia, Malaysia, Cuba, and Puerto Rico, also have red, white and blue...
