Why does it matter if illegal immigrants can speak English or not?

Answer:
Usefulness at the time of entering the USA is only one of the things we should consider before deciding whether immigration is a good thing for the USA.
Because future usefulness is practically impossible to quantify or qualify, we go instead by what has happened in the past.
it does'nt
because there in are country and there are laws and if they dont like it they can leave most americans speak english
IT DONT MATTER. ITS A FREE COUNTRY. THERE ARE NO RESTRICTIONS.
True... if illegal they should be just sent home.. they can speak whatever they like there.
not being funny or anything but if they are illegal they should not be here anyway.
Who cares what they speak as long as they speak it in
another country.
Because certain matters can't be handled even with a translator because of the different dialects.
Because everone in this country (U.S.A) should have to speak our language if they are going to live here!! Its just ridiculous! It makes me mad just thinking about it so im done answering this wuestion.
As long as we send them back to where they came from, it doesn't.
They shouldnt have time to learn it they should be deported!!!!!
Good Question. If people researched they would learn there is NO offical language of the Unoted States, we just speak it here. I do think that if someone wants to become a legal immigrant of whatever country they desire they need to learn the language enough to communicate that their other country members speak.
it doesnt. they do jobs that dont require much communication other than amongst themselves.
they do need to know basics...how can they order food, pay for thing or if they get arrested and do not understand english you cant really say they broke the law if they cant understand the law initially...i see young kids paying for their parents all the time...
...because it's especially annoying if they can't! Sike, I'm being mean.

If someone can speak the native language, it shows some kind of preparation, or sincerity in intending to be a contributing member of society. I mean, no one should be obligated to know how to speak the language right when they get here, but I've known some people who have lived here for like 20 years, and never learned one word, while they live off of welfare. What kind of deed is this? This isn't acceptable by any standard.
illegal immigrants shouldn't be speaking English
They should go back home
communication
I don't feel immmigrants, legal or not, should have to give up their culture but out of the respect to the fact that our country is helping to provide them refuge, opportunity and a paycheck, not to mention free education to their children - the least they could do is learn to speak our native tongue. After all most countries would not cater to their language barrier problems.
It is important for people to be able to communicate and understand our language properly in order to function while in our country.
because this is the united states of america. Not the united states of mexico.
One would think that if you are going to another country to live whether it be legal or not you would want to be able to speak the mother language of that country...so you know what is going on ...life would be a bit easier don't you think. Why should the entire country change their mother tongue for others coming here? I say if you can't speak English too bad and leave, we didn't ask you to come here and we are not changing our language to suit you.
I enter as evidence that most Americans born and bred can't speak English, anyway: "because there in are country and there are laws and if they dont like it they can leave most americans speak english".

What patois is THAT, pray tell?
Because to have any reasonable chance of success in America you need to speak English. No one wants to be part of a permanent underclass. or do they?
because if they live in this country and want to stay here, they should take the time to learn the language. i don't care if they're illegal or not.

if you go to france and plan on living there, don't you think you should learn french?

if you don't speak the langauge of the country you live in, you're going to have a hell of time ever getting ahead and making anything of yourself.
i think it has something to do with the concept of assimilation which our laws work towards, instead of isolation

but like everyone else has said, if they are illegal, then they shouldn't be here
In some ways it arguably isn't important for us, true. But I think it's useful for non-nationals to learn the language for their own safety. Otherwise, who knows what could happen? People could miss warnings, and they need to be able to properly communicate with the authorities in case anything happens to them- if I was in a country whose language I had no notion of, one of my greatest fears would be that I could not report a crime done to me. Considering the number of illegal migrants who end up in quite dangerous occupations and situations, I think that's worth considering.

As for us, I really don't see its significance. If I was being sarcastic, (and prescriptivist) I'd point out that most people in our countries can't speak English 'properly' anyway!
Immigrants, legal or not, and in any country should be speaking the language of that country. It works out better for both parties. Don't you hate it when you go to a drivethrough window and the person there doesn't speak English? It's already hard enough to hear them if they were speaking perfect English. It's also probably unpleasant for that person too because they don't know what you're saying. Then when they get your order wrong they'll probably get yelled at with words that they don't understand. It just makes things so much easier if everybody speaks the language appropriate for the country in question.
we mine as well just rename the country Mexico... lol give them everything free healthcare and change of language.

healtcare is a problem in america because of illegals!! but hey lets let all of them in while honest people from othere countrys go through hell to get in. just because your special!!
If youre going to get into a country illegally, then surely it would make some sense to learn a little of the local language.

If only so you can avoid some of the usual pitfalls that beset many people. Like dealing with mean hearted people who think everyone MUST speak english or die!
It doesn't with illegals. It just helps to identify them easier.
Legal immigrants? Yes. They should speak and read english at a 6-8th grade level to understand what is expected of them, like what is expected of natural born citizens.
They come to our country for a better way of life. English is the official language in the USA, and they should learn how to speak it because of this. If I moved to their country, they would expect me to know their language.
