I'm English, can I marry my North Cypriot boyfriend?
I'm devastated I may lose him. I would love to marry him but am worried about me not having a steady job. I've been very ill and on disability benefit for a year, will this affect it? He has worked and paid tax since I met him.
Answer:
Unfortunately, he would not be allowed to marry in the UK without prior approval from the Home Office, which would probably be refused. The law about this is in a state of flux, but anyway the fact of being married does not in itself give him a right to remain in the UK.
However, if he will has or will have completed ten years' legal residence, he can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. It is vital that the application be made before his visa expires! As long as he has had no serious problems with the law, it should be OK. He would be allowed to remain and continue working while any application is considered.
I would advise that you go together as soon as possible to an immigration solicitor to get some proper guidance. He might also qualify after 14 years mixed legal and illegal residence.
Alternatively, even if you don't want to live in Cyprus, you might consider getting married there, he would then apply for a spouse visa to come and join you. Unfortunately, the fact that you are on benefits would count against his application being accepted, however an experienced solicitor can advise how to improve the chances. If you get good quality advice now, there should be a way forward for you.
Good luck.
Of course you can. DO IT
You can marry who the hell you want to. That's one of the advantages of living in a liberal democracy.
yes marry him and move to Cyprus
Yes and you should keep your benefit - best check however with the DWP. Have you learnt any Turkish yet?
ah I hate to say it but 7 YEARS?
why aren't you married already?
sounds a lot like he doesn't want to get married
Yes- why not. Cypriot people very friendly and cultured people. Perhaps you must return to Cypress. I expect they will allow in many stupid and poor peasant before this useful person, your fiance.
It is very sad the UK is run by bald monkeys in suits.
Think carefully before you marry a foreigner, I married one and moved to his country and as predicted by many others he changed into a selfish monster and expects me to follow his religion and strange ways and worse than that he expects my children to be like him !!
IF YOU LOVE HIM AND HE LOVES YOU AND YOU BOTH WANT TO SPEND THE REST OF YOUR LIVES TOGETHER GO FOR IT. 7 years is long enough to know how you feel about each other . It is not as if this was a holiday romance he was already working and living in this country .Hope it all works out for you and you have a long happy married life together .
There is no reason why you should not marry him as long as you wish to move to Cyprus!!!! See how much Free housing and benefits you get for being 'disabled' there!!!! and nothing for being an immigrant!!! HE IS USING YOU FOR A PASSPORT!!!!!I't'd be better to be dead than be responsible for yet another 'half chat' in MY F*CKING COUNTRY!!!!!!!
If you have been together for seven years and the subject of marriage has only come up when his visa is not being renewed, he is using you, ditch him
You need to show the following:-
1) you are legally married to each other or are in a civil partnership recognised in the UK (Marriage Cert , in English, will do.
2) you are settled in the UK (Either british or Settled with an ideinite time stamp visa)
3) you both intend to live together permanently as husband and wife or as civil partners
4) you have met each other before (This is important)
5) you can support yourselves and any dependants without any help from public funds.
6) you have suitable accommodation, which is owned or lived in only by you and your household, and where you and your dependants can live without any help from public funds
your husband, wife or civil partner is not under 18, and
you are not under 18.
At first, you will be allowed to stay and work in the UK for two years(or may be less depends on the visa officer and how well you present your case) . Near the end of this time, if you are still married and intend to continue living together, you can apply to stay permanently in the UK. (this will be a timeless visa stamp on the passport)
GOOD LUCK!!
If you marry your boyfriend, I think he gets to stay here with you. Go to your local branch of Citizens Advice Bureau and find out. Do it today.
