For family based visas Yes it is like sponsorship because they have to show proof that they make above the poverty line because the gov't doesn't want anyone coming here if they are just gonna go on welfare.
If it is a job based Visa you have to get someone to hire you first and show that they couldn't get anyone to fill that position that's why they need you. Degrees help here.
For a student visa no you don't have to pay tuition first. but you do have to show that you will be able to pay it llike if you got a student loan from your country. Or whoever you were going to live with could pay your tuition.
