What does a British citizen with permanent residency in USA need in order to visit Ireland?

I have "permanent resident" status in the US and have British citizenship. I have not traveled overseas for thirty years and now want to visit Ireland. What is required? Do I need a British passport? (never had one). Where do I get one if I need one?

Answer:
Seems like you would use your British passport.

You would have to carry your return ticket with you, and your residency status will get you back into the US.
I would think that since Ireland and Britain are both in the EU you would just need proof of citizenship, but I am not sure.
How did you get out of England without a passport? You will need a UK passport. Apply in enough time to have it sent to you by your travel date, takes forever - see your embassy for details. You may have to round up your UK birth registry.
