Is the immigration problem just as bad in Ireland as it is in the UK?
Answer:
There is absolutely a whole lotta' whining going on in Ireland about immigration right now... has been since I was there in 1998 when it really started picking up. I'm fairly sure it was mainly small numbers of Roma people there at the time.
Now it appears to me mostly people from EU Eastern European nations, which makes it impossible to curtail. But there are also a lot of Chinese people coming. They have to hire a load of teachers and health care professionals in the next couple of years (saw that on the RTE news we get in the US), and because of all this, they're even trying to set restrictions on people who emigrate from newly admitted EU states.
People (at least, most of the ones I've talked to) generally seem pretty unhappy about this. Not being Irish by birth, I'm hesitant to weigh in on it, but it does seem a BIT interesting that Ireland's recent economic boom would probably not have happened without its membership in the EU (which is what has created their immigration problem), and Ireland has a history of DRAMATIC emigration, yet people are all angry about the immigrants coming in now.
