Would it be difficult for a disabled American to move to the UK by themselves?
Answer:
First how would you come to the UK, which visa would you stay here under? If a company sponsors you, or you have ancestory residence, or a student visa you have full access to the National Health Services, its not perfect but it is free. This includes all GP care, hospital treatment, equiptment etc.
If you were to apply to come here as a skilled migrant you might have a very difficult time persuading the UK immigration authorities that your disability wouldn't be a financial burden on the state. remenber, it is pretty much all socialised medicine here. Private health insurance never covers all of your health needs, it just supplements the NHS for people who don't want to wait too for treatment.
As for just getting around and about without knowing about your disability I can't really answer how you would deal with it, but as a mum pushing a pram it really strikes me how inaacesible some things are - eg the london underground, 2/3 of the stations have no lift, just elevators or sometimes only steps.
I really can't give you alot of answers but I live part-time in Europe.I have a bad knee,so I can tell you that being in a country with buildings over 100 years old is not always easy. Most don't have wheelchair acess and not all have lifts.Lots and lots of stairs.Uneven sidewalks in many places and alot of bussiness are underground in cellars. The newer buildings are much better for disabled people.
You probably would not have any recourse to public funds i.e. social security benefit, disability benefit and dependent on what visa you are coming over with will determine if you are able to get free healthcare. Now if you married a UK citizen for the first two years you would not get any of the above but when you get your residency you would be entitled to everything your British husband would get including help with your disabilities.
Getting around is much easier these days as Europe has decided that all buildings have disabled access.
Do look into the types of visa you could travel here on by visiting the Home Office website for visa information.
