Multicultural America or Melting Pot?

Is it better to have a country with multiple culturals, or one that has just one culture? Please give pros and cons for each claim.

Answer:
Logically the melting pot theory is better for the US as a whole, but since when have we ever taken the easy route? Our different cultures contribute to our diversity but assimilation is VERY important for the ease of your own family into society and for society to accept and embrace you and your family. A divided company will fail, so will a divided country.
Multiple cultures, sure why not? Why is this in Immigration though.. perhaps you've got a loaded question there?
One culture brings unity, while multiple cultures bring division, and thus hatred for each other.

The perfect example is... America.
what is this a college question?
anyway.it's better to have a multicultural one

pro: learn that there are different cultures in the world, enjoy each other food's, dress code's, languages, marketing on a global level,

Con: people will never stop hating on people that are different from them, i.e racism
'One culture' is meaningless since we always had 'flavors' brought in by those settling here. However, they assimilated to us and did not expect us to change to suit them. We took things from them that we wanted - not those forced on us. We have regional differences as well, because of choice of those living there, not having it forced on them. However the E pluribus unum idea requires we all meld into something called 'Americans' not little enclaves where we can't even talk to eachother.

Multiculturalism is divisive. See Governor Lamm on this subject.

Since E pluribus unum is even written on our coins, I don't think this was 'false advertising' to those who came here. They could have chosen to go to a multicultural country instead of a country where the cultural ideal is a melting pot.
Multi-cultural creates "boundries" between each culture... Each holding on to their own language and ideals serves little to the country as a whole and makes it difficult to expand out into something greater.
Example:
In N. NewJersey there are several Latin areas, mainly Union City in Hudson county. It is mainly Cuban and many if not most of the first generaltion Cubans arrived when Castro took over the island. They are successfull in their business' and have made a good living for themselves here. Sadly, many of those people here since the early 60's still refuse to learn english and assimilate as Americans. I suppose if I were Cuban and had to leave my homeland, I would try to hold on to everything that was "Cuban" too. But this has caused alot of problems as well. Many of them can't or choose not to move out or expand their lives past that community. There is no growth.
I think the US is no longer a 'MELTING POT". It is more like a "SALAD" where each item is separate and maintains is singular identity on that plate. But. It's just a salad... Know what I mean?
Give me a "STEW OR MELTING POT" where all items combined can create something better and new!
A multicultural nation is wonderful if the multiple culture's are willing to assimilate and become citizens of the US .
I think it's good for everyone to treasure and honor their heritage. It's when you ignore the culture you've chosen to join and only choose to embrace the culture you chose to leave that it's a problem.
its more like a boiling pot thats about to have the lid blown off of it.
We wont have to wait for an eternity to find out. America has
turned into a place where many different cultures flourish.
America as a whole does not feel a cultural identity. The
European invasion started it. The new American invasion
is bringing it on again. And the future domination from Asia
will destroy us. At this point it doesn't appear that we even
have a plan for our nation's future. Much less a master plan.
It's ok to have multiple cultures. That's what America is made of. What's wrong with that?
What I hear most of you are saying, is that multicultural is OK as long as we assimilate. That is not true the dominate culture has limited the participation of minorities for 175 (231) years that is why the courts integrated the school, passed EEOC and affirmative action laws, anti discrimination legislation, forced entry to white Universities and schools , with armed Federal Troops that accompanied students into these school.. Your people did not go along without kicking and screaming. The solid democratic white South, joined the Republican party, because of the Democratic , fight for racial equality and has attempted to return to the good ole Boys days. Now you say that to be an American one should learn to be like you. IT may be a surprise to you, but I don't want to be like you , or you and your culture has nothing I desire. I found out a long time ago, if we wanted a helping hand it would be attached to my own arm. The "Melting pot" is a Lie.and has always been.
good question... I had to think a little... i really believe that a culture is necessary... and within that culture subcultures arise with slightly different preferences and ways of life. However, talking about the US, it seems that this country doesn't really have A culture. When you think about the US, you think about white, red, and blue, apple pie, baseball,... but wait, not everybody... others may think about other things becuase this country is really a salad bar of several cultures with differences in language and food, among others things. Then you have the sub-sub cultures that are formed by immigrants that want to keep their original culture alive and we encounter places like chinatown, the hispanic neighborhood, etc.
I strongly believe that culture is the glue that keeps societies together and it is important. The lack of a cohesive and unified culture in the US is, in my opinion, one of the reasons people have such a hard time identifying with one another.
That's what I think...
multiple cultures, our country is turning into mexico and that is just not diverse enough for me.
