I am an American Citizen by parents but I was born in Spain. I was told by my mother that at 18 Spain "asks" me if I want to keep my American citizenship or Spanish citizenship. My mother told me that if I chose American I would automatically have dual citizenship. Obviously at 18, I chose American, I wanted both. I have never done much more with my Spanish citizenship because I live in US, have a passport and have traveled to Spain with no problems. Lately, I have been thinking of moving to Spain so I thought no problem, until. I heard, that if I haven't kept my Spanish citizenship updated it becomes void? Anyone know if this is true? I asked my mom about this and she said she had not heard about that before and didn't know. Where can I find more info on this? Any websites? If it is true, how do I go about doing it? Thanks!

Well, the problem is that unlike many other European countries, Spain does not recognize dual citizenship while the US does, therefore you can't get Spanish citizenship unless you renounce your American citizenship. So what I think is the best for you is that you only get Spanish Permanent Resident visa because you can work, live and study anywhere in Spain AND any other EU countries, plus you won't have to give up your US nationality.
Besides, American passport does so much more than any other passport for you. Yo can travel to 188 countries without visa.
