Well my middle name is my mothers family last name.It is given in our family to allow the females of the family to pass down our mothers birthright.

My daughter has it as her middle name and she will pass on thru her children when she has any.Its also given to some males to perpetrate that family name. Well, they just give you an alternative. Like I use my middle name instead of my first because if I used my first, I would have the same name as my dad. It serves the purpose of telling me apart from him. That's just me though.
