Their were not hundred of thousand of Mexicans living in these states back then, most were still in Mexico, that is why they could not hold on to land that is not occupied and why Santa Anna asked Americans to settle in Texas. Besides it was the Spaniards that laid claim to the land in Ca, all missions were set up by Spaniards not Mexicans. They didn't know how to settle anything. They just come and squat.
