I'm a permanent resident in the U.S. but i've been out of the country for straight 5 years what should i do
Answer:
You're not a permanent resident in the US anymore.
.
My suggestion would be to stay where you are.
I think you no longer are a permanent resident after 1 year out, sorry. Go to uscis.gov to double check.
Um, no you're not. If you are not residing here then you are not a permanent resident. When you try to come in the country with your unexpired card, you will have to fill out form I-407. You gave up your permanent resident status 4 1/2 years ago. You are going to have to go through the whole process again, from the beginning.
it don't look good i think you loss your permanent resident Status 4 years ago
Less Than a Year: Use Your Green Card
If you are a lawful permanent resident (immigrant) returning to the United States from a visit abroad of less than a year, you may apply for readmission by presenting your Permanent Resident Card ("Green Card") to the immigration authorities at a port of entry.
If you are outside the United States, and your permanent resident card will expire within six months, (but you will return within one year of your departure from the United States and before the card expires), you should file for your renewal card as soon as you return to the United States.
If you are outside of the United States at the time of the card’s expiration, and you have not applied for the renewal card prior to your departure, you should contact the nearest American Consulate, USCIS office, or Port of Entry, before attempting to file Form I-90 for a renewal I-551 card.
For more information on USCIS office locations, see the Field Offices page. For information on filing fees, see filing fees, fee waiver request procedures, and the fee waiver policy memo.
.
First you are no longer a Permament Resident of the U.S.
Second if you wish to get back to US, you need to have your original sponsor file a new I130 with infromation that you were once granted the The Green Card, it will take about 1 year to 1 1/2 year and you can come back.
But if your original sponsor is not able to sponsor you again you are out of Luck.
It depends upon the reason for your absence. Are you in the military, or spouse of military stationed overseas? If so, go to the legal office on your base. They will help you.
You should enjoy the place you're at. Your Green Card is no longer valid. If you want to live in the United States you'll have to start all over again with the immigration process.
