Why do people think America is not suppose to have any laws? Immigrant advocates had planned Thursday's protest outside federal buildings downtown long before authorities carried out raids this week at former Swift plants, searching for alleged immigration violators and other criminals.
Tuesday's operation by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement at Swift & Co. meatpacking plants across the country, including Greeley, underscored the concerns by immigrants and their supporters who demanded during their protest that the Department of Homeland Security put a halt to the raids.
About 50 protesters walked in front of the Byron White U.S. Federal Building and Courthouse carrying signs that read, "Stop the Raids," along with a photograph of a child in distress. The photo of the youngster is meant to highlight the frustration raised by immigrants and their backers that parents and their children are being separated by the job enforcement operations.
"I want to say that your presence is very important because it means that the struggle is going to continue," Dora Medina, a Guatemalan immigrant and a member of the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, told the marchers and the media.

They came here illegally, they chose to have anchor babies. I mean, we have freedom for peaceful demonstration. So, I guess they can. Do I give it any merit? No, the choice is being made to have these kids, to break into our country illegally. They knew when they had those kids that they might have to take them back home or leave them here.
They didn't worry about those children when they had them. I feel for the anchor babies. I would hate to think my parents had me just to continue breaking the immigration laws of a country they invaded. But I think they need to keep families together. Send the children with their parents. Never break up the family unit.

I think citizens should be protesting, petitioning , calling congressmen and the media and demanding we bust all these businesses hiring lots of illegals.
Though 'raids' are dramatic and high-profile, they really don't accomplish that much. More systematic - and systemic - enforcement, targetted primarily against employers, is needed.
Yes, this is America and people have the right to protest in a peaceful manner. If they let the KKK and other such groups can protest, then the Immigration advocates can also.
Do I agree with them, no I do not. I feel the raids are warranted and should continue and these illegals deported. I am a staunch supporter of people coming into our country by legal means, not illegally. But I agree that people have the right to protest under the amendments that makes this country what it is.
They can picket all they want.

The only thing these protests do is make the majority of Americans and legal immigrants more and more angry. They're sticking a fork in their own cause.
See, unlike protesting for the rights of people who are being deprived of rights they're entitled to, protesting to assist lawbreakers is a waste of time. We aren't going to suddenly jump up and say, "Oh, we're sorry, you're right. You should be able to stay, work, and do anything you want." It's insulting to our collective intelligence. It angers those of us who fight for our rights as legal citizens and it distracts lawmakers and law enforcement from doing what needs to be done. Just get rid of them already. Too many of our legal unskilled workers need those jobs.
As for some of the protesters being US citizens, who cares. Plenty of us are misguided and blinded by emotional attachment ridiculous causes. I don't hear what they say any louder than what an illegal says. It's the same BS.
