Is Mexico known by welcoming Lebanese and Syrian Immigrants to Mexico since centuries ago ?

Orgullo Hispano.- Carlos Slim Helú (born January 28 , 1940 in Mexico City ) is Latin America 's richest man (and #3 in the world) according to Forbes . His wealth comes from his businesses in the communications industry, Teléfonos de México and América Móvil telecommunication companies.

His father was Julián Slim Haddad ( Yusef Salim Haddad ), a Lebanese Maronite Christian, who as a teenager fled to Mexico in 1902 , escaping the harsh military rule of the Ottoman Turks . His father and two of his older brothers arrived at the Mexican port of Tampico , making their way to Mexico City where, in 1911 , Julian established a dry goods store called La Estrella del Oriente and took a gamble and bought up some prime real estate in the city core-a shrewd move as it turned out.

'That was courage,' says Slim Helu, 'He taught me no matter how bad a crisis gets, Mexico isn't going to disappear, and that if I have confidence in the country, any sound investment will eventually pay off.'

Nice history lesson. So what's the question again? Seriously though, why would you want to move to Mexico? Are things really that terrible in Lebanon or Syria that you would travel clear across the ocean to go to Mexico? While you are at it, why not go to the US or Canada? I've been to Mexico twice on one week trips. I've seen not just the tourist traps but also the countryside and the seedier sides of the cities. Trust me, Mexico is no place to live. The cities are dirty and full of trash, the roads are torn up, thousands of people live in shanties or worse, people beg you for money on the street corners, you can't drink the water nor eat raw fruit or veggies unless you are already immune to their strains of ecoli and other germs, the police are corrupt and you have to bribe them to stay out of trouble. The only thing Mexico has going for it, is that the beer and pop is really cheap. The only way I would live in Mexico would be to live on a farm a long ways from any town and be so wealthy that I could have my own water well, power generator and enough land to raise crops and livestock on. I got to go to such a hacienda on one of my trips. It was the only time during my stay in that country where I felt safe and where I dared to eat anything that wasn't cooked or drink anything that hadn't been boiled. It was nice there, but the rest of the country was unpleasant. I traveled quite a bit too. We went to Guadalajara, Jalisco and the Chiahawa (forget how to spell it) province and everywhere in between. I'll never go back if I can help it.
In Mexico they welcome and accept you as one of their own if you speak the language, integrate into the culture, contribute to society, and pledge your allegiance to Mexico, (it helps a lot if you are born there too). There are many people from all parts of the world too and the children of immigrants who are born in Mexico are called Mexicans regardless of where their parents came from. You can see children of German, Italian, English, French, Spanish immigrants simply calling themselves Mexicans. That's it, they are not German-Mexican or French-Mexican, or English-Mexican. It's just Mexican. It's weird to see these blond blue-eyed kids calling themselves Mexican and loving their country of birth. The Mexican people WOULDN'T have it any other way.
Unlike us here in the states where we Mexican-American families all need to teach our children to love their country of birth, not the country where our grandparents and parents came from!
Also lets stop calling each other Mexican-American, African-American, Asian-American etc, are we like the only place on earth that does this besides the English and French Canadians? I think this just divides us more. If we are born here we are American and that's it.
